Brockway hands ECC 7-4 loss in season opener

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team opened their season on Monday by hosting the Brockway Rovers at Berwind Park. The Rovers were able to take advantage of seven Elk Catholic errors on their way to a 7-4 victory over the Crusaders.
“After two weeks inside you have to be ready to play and we weren’t,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt.
“They took advantage of our mistakes and that’s what good teams do. Their pitcher kept us off balance. Thank goodness it’s a long season,” said Father Eric.

Dutch tennis team opens season with win over Altoona

The St. Marys Area Dutch tennis team opened their season on Saturday with a 4-3 victory over the Altoona Lions Saturday at Altoona.
“It was nice to finally be able to get out and play our first match of the season. The boys were waiting for this day to finally arrive,” said St. Marys coach Sue Lepovetsky.
At first singles, SMA’s Brandon Romain lost his match 6-2, 6-0 to James Doeing.
At second singles, Keith Meyer of the Dutch defeated Chris Reighard 6-3, 6-3.
Dylan Wiesner of the Dutch won his match in three sets over Tyler Hollingsworth, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Lady Dutch softball hands State College 6-1 loss Saturday

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team evened their record at 1-1 on the young season with a 6-1 victory over the State College squad in a game played at State College Saturday.
“State College is a good hitting team and puts the ball in play, but our defense played well, only committing one error. Our outfield made some nice catches early in the game to keep State College off the board,” said Lady Dutch coach Manny Gerarge.

SMA's Kayla Hoohuli chosen as Class AAA Player of the Year

St. Marys Area senior guard Kayla Hoohuli was selected at the Class AAA Player of the Year by the sports writers from across Pennsylvania.
Kayla was a first-team pick last year as a junior. She finished as the third leading-scorer ever in District 9 with 2,604 points by averaging 28.4 points per game this season.
Hoohuli has signed with Canisius College. She netted more than 26 points per game in her career.

ECC track teams compete at Igloo Invitational

ALTOONA - Two first places and a meet record by Elk County Catholic senior Megan Dornisch were the headlines as the ECCHS track and field teams competed at the 36th annual Igloo Invitational held in Altoona on Saturday.
The 2010 state champion thrower continued her string of first -place finishes by placing first in the shot put with a meet record 41’ 9” throw. Dornisch also picked up a first place in the discus event with a throw of 127’ 0”.

Punxsy track squads sweep ECC teams in season opener

The Elk County Catholic track and field teams opened their season Tuesday by hosting the Punxsutawney squads.
The Punxsy teams swept the Elk Catholic squads. The Chucks beat the Crusaders 82-68 while the Lady Chucks edged the Lady Crusaders 76.5 to 73.5.
“We had a good opening meet today,” said ECCHS Coach John Schneider.

Crusaders open tennis season with 8-1 win over Rams

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders opened the 2011 tennis season on Tuesday afternoon with an 8-1 victory over the Johnsonburg Area High Rams in a match played at Benzinger and Memorial parks.
"This was a good start to the season," said ECCHS Head Coach Nick Caggiano. "We definitely wanted to come on strong and I believe we accomplished that. In singles, Ben and Jarid played strong tennis and imposed their game well. They were patient when they had to be and aggressive when they had to be.

SMA track and field looking for improvement

The St. Marys Area track and field squads will be looking for improvement as the season progresses for both the Lady Dutch and Dutch squads.
Lady Dutch head coach Jamie Caskey feels that the strength of her team will be the veteran athletes.
“We have several school record holders on our team still. The record-holding girls’ 4x800m relay has not lost any members. We hope to keep improving on what we started last year,” Caskey said.

Dutch tennis returns veteran group

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team will rely on their experience during the 2011 tennis season.
Head coach Sue Lepovetsky returns 10 letter winners from a team that captured the District 9 Class AA championship in 2010.
The returning letter winners include seniors Nathan Hansen, Brandon Romain, Keith Meyer, Dylan Wiesner, Brandon Orr, Michael Brennen and Nick Keller, juniors Michael Fox and Evan Lepovetsky and sophomore Dalton Gennocro.
According to Coach Lepovetsky, “Having everyone back except for one person is one of our strengths. We have an experienced group.”

Lady Dutch softball has experience returning

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team has six letter winners returning to form the nucleus of the 2011 squad.
The Lady Dutch, who won the District 9 Class AA title last year, will be competing for the Class AAA title this season.
“We are returning our pitching staff from last year and also return six varsity letter winners from last year. We have a good core group returning and our coaching staff has now been together for a couple of years, and that is key to sustaining the growth of the program,” said St. Marys head coach Manny Gerarge.
