Dutch golfers defeat Brockway 235-248

The St. Marys Flying Dutchmen golf squad picked up a win over visiting Brockway on Thursday afternoon at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course, defeating the Rovers 235 to 248.
"The team played really well today," said St. Marys coach Dan Vollmer following the match. "It was a much-needed win and we look forward to our home match against Ridgway and Kane next week."
Medalists for the day were St. Marys' Sam Miller and Brockway's Andy Genevro and Bret Corr, all of whom shot 11-over-par rounds of 46.

Elk Catholic golfers pick up 207-215 win over Ridgway

The Elk County Catholic High School golf squad picked up a victory over the visiting Ridgway Elkers on Thursday afternoon at the St. Marys Golf Club. The Crusaders won the match 207-215, with the top five scores from each team counting toward the total.
The medalist for the day was Elk Catholic's Elliott Struble with a four-over-par round of 39. The high scorer for Ridgway was Josh Roselli with a 41.

Lady Crusader tennis downs Lady Chucks 8-1

The Lady Crusader tennis squad defeated the Lady Chucks 8-1 on Thursday afternoon in matches played at Benzinger and Memorial parks in St. Marys. Despite the threat of rain, the teams were able to get in all their matches before the wet weather returned early in the evening.
"The weather cooperated and we were able to play a very competitive tennis match against a really nice Punxsy squad," said ECC head coach Pete Meier. "Punxsy has improved tremendously since last year. They have a wonderful group of young ladies, and it was a very enjoyable match to watch."

Lady Dutch volleyball downs Kane 3-0

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team opened their home season on Tuesday by sweeping the Kane Lady Wolves by a 3-0 score at the SMAHS “Dutch Oven”.
St. Marys won the first game 25-19, took the second game 25-21 and won the third game 25-20.
“I thought we played with intensity tonight,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt.
“We served the ball decently but I would like to see some harder hits,” said the coach.
“I thought we covered well tonight. We gave the game ball to Chelsea Gregori who finished the night with 34 digs,” said Vogt.

Lady Dutch soccer team handed 3-2 setback by Port Allegany

The Lady Dutch were handed a minor setback on Tuesday afternoon as they came up short in a back-and-forth contest against Port Allegany, picking up a 3-2 loss to open their regular season. It was a cloudy and cool, yet dry afternoon at St. Marys Area High School's soccer field, despite it having rained off and on throughout much of the morning.
A considerable portion of the game was played on Port Allegany's side of the field as St. Marys kept Port keeper Jordan Edgell on her toes; however, the Lady Dutch were unable to get many shots into the goal.

ECC cross country teams defeat Punxsy squads

The Elk County Catholic cross country teams opened their home seasons on Tuesday when they played host to the Punxsutawney teams.
The Crusaders beat the Chucks by a 24-31 score, while the Lady Crusaders defeated the Lady Chucks 27-30.

Crusaders defeat Red Raiders 19-6 to open season

For the second year in a row, the Elk County Catholic Crusaders football team started off their season with a victory over the Cameron County Red Raiders, this time picking up a 19-6 victory. Both teams had plenty of extra time to consider their strategies during Saturday evening’s match-up at Dutch Country Stadium in St. Marys, as the game was delayed for an hour and 15 minutes during the second quarter due to visible lightning from a storm to the north of the county.

St. Marys cross country teams fare well at Big Valley Invitational

The St. Marys Area cross country teams opened their seasons on Saturday by competing in the Big Valley Invitational held at Reedsville.
The Dutchmen took fifth place with a total of 176 points. State College won the team title with 45 points, followed by Mifflin County 66, Altoona Area 78, Bellefonte 167 and St. Marys. There were a total of 12 teams represented in the boys’ AAA race.

Dutch open season with 34-28 win over Brookville

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team opened the 2011 season with a 34-28 victory over the Brookville Raiders Friday night at Dutch Country Stadium before a good-sized crowd.
“That was a good football game. It was well-played by both squads,” said Dutch coach Joe Schlimm. “I thought we played gutsy and played with emotion and heart.”
“During our second possession of the second half, we began to win the battle at the line of scrimmage,” he said.

Big second half lifts Lady Crusaders soccer

Three goals in a span of three minutes and 56 seconds of the second half helped lift the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders varsity soccer team to a 4-0 season-opening victory Friday afternoon over the visiting DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals.
The two teams played evenly in the scoreless first half. ECC held a slim 6-4 edge in shots at intermission, and only a couple of difficult saves by freshman Lady Crusaders goalkeeper Hanna Onink kept the Lady Cardinals off the scoreboard.
