Dutch wrestlers down short-handed Rams 63-8

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling team raised their record to 5-4 with a 63-8 victory over the short-handed Johnsonburg Rams.
The Dutchmen won nine matches by forfeit: picking up forfeit wins were Evan Smith at 119 pounds, Alex Coudriet at 125, Darren Lyon at 135, Alex Feldbauer at 140, Joe McLaughlin at 189, Jimmy Antonelli at 215, Kevin Hoy at 285, Damien Wensel at 103 and Trenton Bowers at 112 pounds.
In wrestling action, Jesse Wolfe of the Rams recorded a 15-0 technical over Bill Gabor at the 2:42 mark of their 130-pound match.

Bellefonte gymnasts hand St. Marys Area squad first loss

The Bellefonte gymnastics squad defeated the St. Marys Area gymnasts by a 130.325 to 122.05 score Wednesday night in a meet held at the St. Marys Area Middle School.
This was the St. Marys Area squad’s first loss of the season.
“We knew coming into this meet we were going to have a hard time trying to keep up with them. They have a lot of club gymnasts we simply cannot compete with,” said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless.

Dutchmen down DuBois 64-49 in D9 League play

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team used a strong second half to defeat the DuBois Area Beavers by a 64-49 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Beavers held a 27-23 lead at the half. The Dutch were able to outscore DuBois by a 41-22 margin in the second half of the contest.
“I didn’t think pressure bothered them and after the first quarter they had a substantial lead,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido. “We really thought at halftime that we needed to put pressure on them and play our style of game.”

Dutch wrestlers come from behind to beat DuBois 39-36

A pin by Kevin Hoy at 285 pounds gave the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestlers a hard-fought 39-36 victory over the DuBois Area Beavers last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
Hoy, along with fellow senior Jimmy Antonelli, gave the Dutch the victory when they both recorded pins in the final two bouts of the night as St. Marys trailed 36-27 after the 189-pound match.
“That’s what makes high school wrestling great,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “That was a great match from a fan’s perspective.

Crusaders hand Punxsutawney 52-33 setback

Elk Catholic's Crusaders picked up their seventh win of the season on Tuesday evening as they defeated the visiting Punxsutawney Area Chucks by a 52-33 score in a District 9 League encounter at the Aaron J. Straub gym on the Elk Catholic campus.
Things started out very slowly for the Crusaders, as they were held scoreless in the first five minutes of the game, falling behind 9-2. Then, in the final three minutes of the period, the Crusaders began clicking as they outscored Punxsy 8-2 to get back in the game.

Cavaliers win 2011 Conrad Reuscher Basketball Tourney

The St. Marys eighth grade Cavaliers basketball team captured the 2011 Conrad Reuscher Cavalier Basketball Tournament held over the weekend at Elk County Catholic High School. The Cavaliers defeated Blessed Sacrament of Erie in the championship game by a 32-28 score.
The Blessed Sacrament Bulldogs took second, while the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch placed third. Mt. Carmel was fourth, as they defeated DuBois Central and St. Stephen’s of Oil City.
In the Cavaliers’ first game on Friday, they defeated the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Raiders by a 46-37 score.

SMA Quarterback Club holds football awards banquet

The 53rd St. Marys Area Quarterback Club Football Awards Banquet was held Saturday night at the St. Marys Area High School.
The banquet is held to recognize the members of the St. Marys Area High School Flying Dutch football program, including players, coaches and cheerleaders.
The dinner was held in the school cafeteria, followed by the awards portion of the evening, which was held in Carpin Auditorium.
Terry Straub, acting as master of ceremonies for the evening, welcomed everyone to the awards portion of the night.

SMA gymnasts fare well at Bellefonte event

The St. Marys gymnastics team traveled to Bellefonte to participate in a high school gymnastics invitational in which each gymnast competed against other gymnasts in their own grade level on Saturday.
In the ninth grade competition, there were nine competitors: SMA’s Mackenzie Neureiter placed in a tie for third on vault and with the tiebreaker placed fourth on vault with an 8.0; third on floor with a 7.9; and received a 6.2 on beam and a 4.95 on bars.

Lady Crusaders top Sheffield Lady Wolverines 62-17

The Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic High School picked up their sixth win of the season on Saturday evening as they defeated the Sheffield Lady Wolverines by a 62- 17 score in an AML game played at the Aaron J. Straub Gymnasium on the Elk Catholic campus.
"Tonight's victory was a total team effort, as all 11 members of the squad contributed to the win," said ECCHS Head Coach Ken Pistner following Saturday's game. "We shot the ball very well from both the field and the foul line tonight."
