Headed into the final bout of the night, the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen held a slim three-point lead over county rival Ridgway Elkers, 31-28. At one point in the match, the Dutchmen had held a 22-point lead, but Ridgway had rallied and looked poised to steal the victory. Faced with a must-win scenario, St. Marys Area's Cameron Resch came through with a 4-1 decision over Ridgway's Drew Baumgratz to give the Dutch the 34-28 match victory.
The St. Marys Area gymnastics squad hosted the St. Marys Area Gymnastics Invitational on Saturday at the SMA Middle School with four teams competing.
Moon won the team event with a total of 134.45 points. St. Marys was second with 129.225 points followed by DuBois 101.975 and Ridgway 95.9.
The third time turned out to be the charm for the St. Marys and Warren swim and dive teams as they were finally able to compete against each other in a meet Thursday night at the St. Marys Area High School natatorium.
Wednesday night's game didn't quite start the way the Elk County Catholic Crusaders would have liked but it ended the right way.
Elk Catholic was shut out in the first eight minutes of play, 12-0. However, the next three quarters saw the Crusaders outscore the Owls 54-30 to win the game 54-42.
