EBENSBURG â€“ ECC may have been down, but they were never out in Friday night's PIAA Class A opening round game against the Bishop Carroll Huskies at Central Cambria High School. Trailing for most of the game, and by as many as 14 points at one time, the Crusaders came alive in the fourth quarter, rallying to tie the game and force overtime en route to recording a 56-50 victory.
The St. Marys Area girls swim and dive team captured the girls District 9 championship on Saturday at the District 9 meet held at Clearfield Area High School. This is the third straight year the Lady Dutch have won the team title and the third straight year they have finished the season undefeated.
The Lady Dutch finished the meet with 419 points followed by Clearfield with 299.5, Bradford 268 and Brookville 130.5.
It was back to business as usual for the Elk County Catholic Crusaders on Saturday afternoon at Clarion University. Three days after falling to Clarion-Limestone in the District 9 Class A semifinals, the Crusaders got back into the win column after battling the Venango Catholic Vikings throughout a close game, winning by eight, 56-48, to enter the PIAA Class A playoffs as the third seed from District 9.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders defeated the Cameron County Lady Raiders by a 61-45 score Friday night in the District 9 Class A girls consolation game played at the St. Marys Area Dutch Oven.
Both teams will advance to the PIAA Class A Tournament which opens next Saturday, March 7. Elk Catholic will meet the District 10 champion while Cameron County will meet the District 6 champion.
The Clarion-Limestone Lions advanced to the District 9 Class A boys championship game by defeating the Elk County Catholic Crusaders by a 49-40 score in overtime Wednesday night at Clarion University's Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
The Venango Catholic Vikings rallied in the fourth quarter to come-from-behind to hand the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders their first loss of the season by a 50-39 score in a District 9-A semifinal game played at the DuBois Area Middle School.
The St. Marys Area High School gymnastics team finished as the runner-up in the Bronze division at the Pa. Classic Gymnastics Championships over the weekend, ending up just over five points behind Chambersburg in the battle for the title. Chambersburg had a team score of 133.241, while St. Marys earned a 127.809. Placing third was Bellefonte with a score of 125.759 while DuBois Area was fourth with a score of 116.758.
Seven individuals were inducted into the District 9 Wrestling Hall of Fame on Saturday night prior to the start of the finals of the District 9 Class AA and AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament at Clarion University, and among those individuals was current St. Marys Area assistant wrestling coach Doug Surra.
The St. Marys Sportsmen's 12th Annual "Size Doesn't Matter" Coyote Hunt was held this past weekend with 140 hunters signed up from around the state. The registered hunters ranged from Harrisburg to Erie to Pittsburgh, and two from New York State.
