Dutch soccer team picks up 7-1 win over Smethport

Tuesday was a nice afternoon to be out enjoying a soccer match and the spectators who attended the boys' soccer match at St. Marys Area High School were treated to a dominating performance by the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen soccer squad, who picked up a 7-1 win over the visiting Smethport Hubbers. The match saw six different Dutch players score goals, while Brett Lanzel and Josh Burns split time at keeper for St. Marys.

Elk Catholic and Bradford golf teams tie at 213

The Elk County Catholic High School and Bradford Area High School golf teams tied at 213 in a match played at the St. Marys Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
The medalist for the day was Bradford's Josh Stauffer with a four-under-par round of 31. Elliott Struble was the medalist for Elk Catholic with a four-over-par round of 39.
Following Struble for the Crusaders were Brandon Schlimm with a 40, Jess Jaynes with a 44, Mitchell Struble and Drew Meyer with 45s, Bruno Cavalline with a 47, Bryan Haberberger with a 48 and Kristy Hanes with a 51.

Crusader soccer holds off Port Allegany 2-1

KERSEY – The Elk County Catholic Crusader soccer squad picked up a 2-1 victory over Port Allegany on Monday evening at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Fox Township.
"Port Allegany played a very good game," said Elk Catholic assistant coach T.J. Weaver. "The contest was well-played."
"Through the first part of the season, we are growing as a team," Weaver added. "The kids are growing in their positions."
The match started off with Elk Catholic dominating the first half. The Crusaders had 13 shots on goal compared to two for Port Allegany.

Brookville shuts out ECC girls' soccer

ST. MARYS - The Brookville Lady Raiders went home Monday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders in girls' varsity soccer.
    The Lady Raiders scored first just five and one half minutes into the contest, when junior Ashley Wolfe placed a shot into the net.
    Brookville went up 2-0 with 16:34 left in the first half when junior Annie Amsler tallied. Amsler would score again with only 46 seconds left in the game. Sophomore Michelle Crissman had put the Lady Raiders up 3-0 just under 10 minutes after intermission.

ECC soccer wins county tournament

Elk County Catholic won the Elk County Soccer Tournament with a 3-0 win over St. Marys in the championship game Saturday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
"I think we came out strong," Elk County Catholic coach Adam Bailey said. "We seemed to be direct and straight to where we needed to be early on. But the game shows we still have lots of things to do. I'm happy for St. Marys, we play them every year, it's always a strong game to play St. Marys. You cannot take them lightly. We were fortunate this year, in other years, we haven't been."

Lady Elkers win Elk County volleyball tourney

The Ridgway Lady Elkers captured the 2011 Elk County Volleyball Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Elk County Catholic High School gymnasium.
The Lady Elkers won the 15th annual event by defeating the ECCHS Lady Crusaders two games to one in the best-of-three finals.
In the consolation game, the Johnsonburg Ramettes took third place by defeating the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch 30-24.
In pool play, Elk Catholic finished the morning play with a 5-1 record. Ridgway was 4-2, while the Ramettes were 3-3 and the Lady Dutch 0-6.

St. Marys cross country teams perform well at Forest Hills

SIDMAN – The St. Marys Area High School cross country teams competed in the Forest Kills 5k Invitational on Saturday in Sidman, with the girls' squad finishing seventh out of 18 and the boys placing 10th out of 21.
"On a very wet day and muddy course, the cross country teams performed well in Sidman," said St. Marys Area coach Stan Foster.

Lady Dutch soccer team falls to Clearfield 4-0

The Lady Dutch were handed a 4-0 loss by the Clearfield Lady Bisons on Saturday morning in a match played under partly sunny skies at the St. Marys Area High School's soccer field.
Prior to the playing of the national anthem, St. Marys Area School District Activities Director Terry Straub addressed the crowd and asked everyone to join in honoring the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and all of the country's servicemen and women.

Dutch improve to 2-0 with 44-6 win over Lions

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team raised their record to 2-0 on the season with a 44-6 victory over the Clarion-Limestone Lions in a game played at Dutch Country Stadium on Elementary Night.
Elementary Night was interrupted by lightning with 8:20 to go in the first quarter. Each time lightning was spotted, a 25-minute delay occurred. The delay began at 7:07 p.m., with the game resuming at 8:23 p.m. The stands were also cleared due to the lightning.

Crusaders shut out Otto-Eldred Terrors 48-0

DUKE CENTER - The Elk County Crusader football team shut out the Otto-Eldred Terrors 48-0 on Friday evening, winning on the road to remain undefeated. While there were showers in the area, the rain held off for the duration of the game in Duke Center.
"It was a slow start, but it was a complete game offensively and defensively," said ECC coach Travis Skrzypek. "They finished well. We were a little worried in the third quarter there, but they got it together. It was a total team effort. Everybody got time tonight. Everybody responded, everybody played well."
