In recognition of Girl Scouts Week, taking place March 6-12, local leaders have organized an array of activities for girl scouts and their families.
This weekend, a Family Day will be held at the Apollo Theatre in downtown St. Marys. Doors will open at 3 p.m., with the movie Rango beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The reservation deadline for those interested in attending has been extended until Saturday, March 5 at noon. Reservations may be made by contacting Amy Anderson, service unit manager, at 834-2841. Callers need to supply the name of the Girl Scout, her troop number, what day they are planning to attend and the number of people attending.
Anderson said the local Girl Scouts Neighborhood is paying for all scouts to attend the movies, while a special price including admission, a small soda and a small popcorn is available for their family members.
This is the third year the scouts have hosted a Family Day at the movies.
"The girls were impressed with the theatre after Darlene offered one of the troops a behind-the-scenes tour while they were passing by outside and looking in the windows during the renovation," Anderson said.
"I think the girls have developed a respect for the theatre, after seeing all the hard work that has been put into it," noted Barb Daniels, fellow service unit manager.
An awards ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, March 12 in the St. Marys Area High School auditorium. The ceremony will be followed by a social. A religious celebration will take place prior to the ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. Several local scouts will assist with the religious ceremony.
"We talked about having a ceremony for two to three years," Anderson said.
"We figured we want to get it right for our 100th anniversary next year," Daniels added.
The 100th anniversary ceremony is being planned for the week of March 11, 2012 at the St. Marys Catholic Church.
