Allen H. "Acky" Herr

Allen H. "Acky" Herr, 88, of 306 Walnut St., St. Marys, died on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor.
He was born Sept. 22, 1923 in St. Marys, a son of the late Samuel and Mildred Claster Herr.
On Oct. 7, 1947 in St. Marys, he married Helen Kreckle Herr, who survives.
Mr. Herr graduated from St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1941. He served during WWII in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1945, having served 34 combat missions over Germany as a top turret gunner on a Flying Fortress B-17. He owned and operated Allen's Sporting Goods Store on Erie Avenue from 1945-1962. In 1962, he joined his brother and they ran Sam's Mens and Boys Clothing Store together until their retirement. He was a member of the Elks and the Legion. He enjoyed building model airplanes and model trains, fishing and photography. He was Jewish by faith. 
In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by a son, Harry Herr and his wife Ruth, of Palmyra; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lewis Herr of Raleigh, N.C.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joel Herr.
Funeral services for Allen "Acky" Herr will be held at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home, 151 North Michael St., St. Marys, on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Meinrad Lawson, OSB, officiating. A military service will be conducted by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.
