ST. MARYS - Many people dream of someone special they would like to meet—a celebrity, a mentor, or a figure known the world over. St. Marys residents Mary and Jake Meyer realized that dream when they recently met Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican in Rome.
The Meyers were invited to accompany their brother-in-law, Warren Hayford, a member of the Papal Foundation, on a four-day pilgrimage to Rome sponsored by the foundation. Mary, who is the director of advancement for the Elk County Catholic School System, said the pilgrimage featured visits to a number of churches and other places of historical significance, Masses, and an exploration of Roman culture and the history of the Catholic Church.
“Each of the four days, there were several cardinals and quite a few bishops that were with us at each of these days at the Masses,” Mary said.
Jake Meyer said he was impressed "how spiritual, yet how down-to-earth these men were."
