ST. MARYS - A resolution to include Ridgway Area School District in a pre-existing athletic co-operative between St. Marys Area School District and Elk County Catholic High School was the subject of much discussion at Monday night's meeting of the SMASD Board of Directors. Terry Straub, student activities director for SMASD, said the issue involves the modification of the current co-operative between SMASD and ECC for the sports of swimming and diving to also include the Ridgway Area School District.
The St. Marys Area High School is the host school in this co-operative which entails the use of their facilities, in this case the high school's swimming pool. As host school it is also the responsibility of the SMASD board to create the resolution before submitting it for approval to subsequent parties involved.
Straub said that the resolution between SMASD and ECC has been in place since the 1998-1999 school year, adding that the proposed modification to include Ridgway Area School District began approximately three years ago, with the then-superintendent of the Ridgway district approaching SMASD superintendent Anne Kearney requesting inclusion in the co-operative.
