Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner indicated to authority members that the annual free tire recycling collections will be held the last week of April in conjunction with the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania.
Titchner explained to authority members that while the event has gone over well in the past in most areas of the county, there have been certain areas where problems have arisen and she hoped to implement restrictions, including imposing limits on the number and type of tires, that will be accepted at the collection this year to make the program run more smoothly.
"Some places we had [tire collections set up] it was wonderful. Other places we had people showing up with five-foot tires saying they came off of their pickup truck," Titchner said.
According to Titchner, annual tire collections have been held in the area for at least 15 years.
"I just do not know where people have like 70 tires anymore, unless they sell them, because people can take tires over to the landfill any time during the course of the year and if it's four, eight tires we pick up the cost of that," Titchner said. "We've gotten to the point where if someone goes over with a bunch of tires then they're going to either pay the bill or we'll help them pay the bill. The landfill's been kind enough to get back to us with some people who brought tires that were from commercial, so we just billed them and they paid us."
The purpose of the program, Titchner stressed, was designed to aid people looking to dispose of residential tires.
