Betty Jean Geer

Betty Jean Geer, 86, of Swedetown Road, Portland Mills, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 at DuBois Regional Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 28, 1926, the daughter of the latePerry E. and Edith Ecklund Geer.
She lived in Lake City all of her life and attended schools in the Village of Lake City, Portland Mills and Ridgway.
Betty was a lifelong member of the Lake City United Methodist Church, where she loved teaching the youth in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Betty served as the tax collector for Spring Creek Township for 14 years and served as a 4-H leader for more than 50 years. She was also a member of the Port-Lake Civic Club for many years and served on the Spring Creek Township election board over 30 years.
Betty was knowledgeable about the birds and wildlife of the area as well as plants and wildflowers. A favorite story to tell was when she chased the bear off her porch with a broom.
Betty is survived by a sister-in-law, Esther Geer of Franklin; 15 nieces and nephews, Carol Geer of Toledo, Ohio , Daniel Geer of Phoenix, Ariz., Ed Geer of Travelers Rest, N.C., Doris Hartman of Longview, Wash., Paul Geer of Franklin, Clifton Sutliff of Pittsburgh, Bert Shick and Susan Trail of Charlotte, N.C., Gary, Robert, Ronald and Steven Shick and Judy Rocha of Ridgway, Rhonda Frantz of DuBois, and James Frantz of New Jersey; and by many great- and great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by five brothers, Clifton, Clarence, Howard, Perry, and Edward Geer; five sisters, Olga Carnahan, Hazel Geer, Ruby Sutliff, Dorothy Shick, and Maxine Frantz; two nephews, William Geer and Dale Carnahan; and by a niece, Shirley Baker.
Funeral services for Betty Jean Geer will be held in the Lake City United Methodist Church on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 at 11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Lila Bachelier, pastor. Interment will be in Lake City Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Meehan-Shilk Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
