The Bradford Area Lady Owls basketball team escaped with a 54-51 District 9 League victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Owls entered the contest undefeated and it wasnâ€™t until the final seconds of the game that they remained that way. Bradford held an 8-4 lead after one period of play. The Lady Dutch battled back to even the score at 23 at the half. In the third period, Bradford outscored St. Marys 15-13 for a 38-36 lead with eight minutes remaining. The Lady Owls managed to outscore the Lady Dutch 16-15 in the fourth quarter to win the game by three.
â€śIt was a good game. We just needed that extra stop in the third quarter when they got three uncontested layups,â€ť said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli.
â€śWe moved the ball pretty good offensively and when we did move the ball, we had good movement,â€ť said Hoohuli. â€śI am proud of the way we competed with them. Kiana (Hoohuli) and Adair (Gennocro) did a good job creating our offense.â€ť
The Lady Dutch offense was led by Kiana Hoohuli with 22 points on three twos, four threes and a four-for-seven night from the foul line. Adair Gennocro added 12 points on three twos and two threes.
For Bradford, Ali Rinfrette led the way with 17 points on four twos, a three and a six-for-seven night from the foul line. Kaserra Owens had 14 points on five twos, a three and a one-for-one night from the foul line. Emily Marshall had 11 points on five field goals and a one-for-three night from the foul line. Alex Vinelli had 10 points on three twos, a three and a one-for-one night from the foul line.
Gennocro scored the first points of the game with 6:35 left in the opening period. Rinfrette answered for Bradford. Hoohuli made it 4-2 with 5:23 left. Bradford scored the final six points of the period to lead 8-4 after the first eight minutes of play.
Rinfrette hit a three to open the second quarter for the Lady Owls. Becky Krieg scored for the Lady Dutch with Owens adding a three-point play for Bradford. She then connected on a three as Bradford led 17-6. St. Marys went on a 12-2 run to cut the Bradford lead to 19-17. Hoohuli connected on two foul shots and a three while Gennocro and Anderson both hit threes. Alex Vinelli made it 22-17 with a three-point play. Anderson hit a three, 22-20, with 1:21 left. Marshall made one of two from the foul line, 23-20. DeAnna Yost hit a three with four seconds remaining to knot the game at 23 at the half.
Gennocro and Yost hit back-to-back threes and Gennocro added a two as St. Marys took a 31-23 lead. Unfortunately, Bradford went on an 11-0 run to take a 34-31 lead with 2:12 left in the third period. Hoohuli knotted the score with a three. Owens and Hoohuli traded field goals, 36-36. Alex Vinelli connected on a field goal as Bradford led 38-36 at the end of three quarters.
Rinfrette scored for Bradford to open the fourth quarter. Taylor Schutz converted a three-point play for the Lady Dutch, cutting the Bradford lead to 40-39. Rinfrette sank two foul shots and Haley Vinelli made it 44-39. Gennocro hit a two and Hoohuli converted a three-point play to knot the score at 44 with 4:17 left. Marshall made it 46-44. Hoohuli connected on a three, giving St. Marys the 47-46 lead with 2:06 left. Rinfrette sank two foul shots before Hoohuli made one of three, 48-48. Owens gave Bradford the 50-48 lead with 1:14 left. Hoohuli hit a three, giving the Lady Dutch the 51-50 lead with 56 seconds remaining. Rinfrette scored with 40 seconds remaining, 52-51. After a St. Marys miss, Bradford called a timeout. Rinfrette was able to sink two foul shots with 23 seconds remaining to make it 54-51. St. Marys had three opportunities in the closing seconds, but was unable to connect as Bradford won 54-51.
The Lady Dutch are now 4-6 overall and 1-1 in District 9 League play.
St. Marys returns to action next Tuesday when they play host to the DuBois Area Lady Beavers in another District 9 League game. Junior varsity begins at 6 p.m., with varsity set for 7:30 p.m.
The St. Marys Area Dance Team entertained those in attendance at halftime of last nightâ€™s varsity contest.

The St. Marys junior varsity squad held off a fourth quarter rally by Bradford to register a 36-34 victory.
St. Marys took an 8-6 first-period lead and outscored the Lady Owls 8-4 to take a 16-10 halftime lead.
St. Marys outscored Bradford 9-7 in the third period to increase their lead to 25-17 with one period remaining. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Owls outscored the Lady Dutch 17-11, but it wasnâ€™t enough as St. Marys won 36-34.
