The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team saw their District 9 League record slip to 4-2 on the year with a 42-35 loss to the Brookville Raiders last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
While the Dutch held a 23-15 halftime lead, they only were able to score 12 points in the second half as the Raiders outscored them 27-12 in the final 16 minutes of play.
â€śWe only scored 12 points in the second half. Itâ€™s tough to win when you donâ€™t break the 40-point mark,â€ť said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
â€śBrookville did a better job against us in the second half. They are a good defensive team. Tonight they outplayed us.
â€śDefensively, we played pretty well, but offensively we suffered from a poor offense, even though we had some good looks.â€ť
St. Marys was led offensively by Justin Quiggle with 12 points on three twos and two threes. Jimmy Werner was next with nine points.
For Brookville, Jared Heschke led the way with 11 points on five field goals and a one-for-three night from the foul line. Kyle Baughman added nine points, while Dan Ion and Ryan Zimmerman each had eight.
The Dutch took the 6-0 lead as Quiggle hit a field goal and Werner two foul shots and a field goal. Heschke made it 6-1 with 4:54 left in the period. Zimmerman hit a two, making it 6-3. Quiggle and Zimmerman traded threes. Jordan Weinzierl scored for the Dutch and Quiggle hit a three, with the Dutch leading 14-6 after the first period.
Weinzierl sank two foul shots before Heschke hit a two and Baughman converted a three-point play, making it 16-11. Dylan Reigel sank a foul shot and Werner added another as the Dutch went up 18-11. Heschke hit a two and Baughman sank two foul shots, making it 18-15. Reigel sank two foul shots and Ryan Uhl converted a three-point play to give the Dutch a 23-15 halftime lead.
Brookville scored the first four points of the second half, 23-19. Reigel made it 25-19 before Zimmerman hit a three for the Raiders, 25-22. Uhl and Quiggle scored, giving St. Marys the 29-22 lead with 2:32 left in the period. Ion hit a field goal as the Raiders cut the Dutch lead to 29-24 at the end of three quarters.
Quiggle gave the Dutch the early 31-24 lead at the 7:52 mark. Brookville scored the next 14 points; the Dutch did not score until the 1:25 mark on a bucket by Werner as Brookville led 38-33. A bucket by Werner made it 38-35 with 52 seconds left. Ion and Baughman each sank two foul shots as Brookville won 42-35.
The Dutchmen are now 12-4 overall and 4-2 in District 9 League play.
The Dutch return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Bradford for another District 9 League game.
In pre-game activities, the Dutch fourth, fifth and sixth grade basketball players were introduced to the crowd in attendance.

The St. Marys junior varsity squad lost to the Raiders by a 51-41 score.
Brookville took a 15-11 first-period lead and outscored the Dutch 11-8 in the second period for a 26-19 halftime advantage.
In the third period, Brookville outscored St. Marys 14-6. The Dutch outscored the Raiders 16-11 in the fourth quarter, making the final score 51-41 in favor of Brookville.
