The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team opened play in the District 9 League by hosting the Brookville Raiders Tuesday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven, where the Raiders handed the Dutch a 54-33 loss.
The Raiders outscored the Dutch by a 27-13 margin in the first half and a 27-20 margin in the second half to record the victory.
â€śThis was a bad night,â€ť said St. Marys coach Mark Guido. â€śWe got outcoached, we got outplayed from the beginning to the end.â€ť
â€śNow we have three practices to get ready for Bradford,â€ť said Guido. â€śWe have to put this game behind us and learn from it.â€ť
The Dutch were led offensively by Justin Quiggle with 14 points on three twos, two threes and a two-for-three night from the foul line. Justin Beimel was next with seven points.
Brookville was led by Zane Hackett with 21 points on 10 field goals and a one-for-two night from the foul line. Tighe Truman and Austin Burney each scored 11 points. Truman scored his points on one two and three threes. Burney scored his points on four field goals and a three-for-three night from the foul line.
Quiggle gave the Dutch the early 2-0 lead. Truman answered with a three and a two for Brookville, 5-2. Quiggle tied the game with a three at the 4:56 mark. Hacket converted one of two foul shots, then added a field goal, 8-5. Sam Guido hit a three for the Dutch to tie the game at 8-all. Brookville scored the final six points of the period to take a 14-8 lead.
Beimel scored for the Dutch to open the second period and cut the Brookville lead to 14-10. Brookville then went on an 11-0 run to take a 25-10 lead with 3:11 left. Werner sank one of two foul shots, 25-11. Hackett and Shajuan Carrero traded buckets as the Raiders led 27-13 at the half.
The Raiders opened the second half by scoring six unanswered points to go up 33-13 with 5:49 left in the quarter. Caleb Bennett hit a three for the Dutchmen, 33-16. Hackett and Quiggle traded buckets, 35-18. Hackett scored again, 37-18. The Dutch went on an 8-0 run as Quiggle hit a three and converted two of three foul shots. Beimel added a three to make it 37-26. Hackett converted two foul shots to give the Raiders the 39-26 lead after three quarters.
Two threes by Truman gave Brookville a 45-26 lead to open the fourth quarter. Quiggle scored for the Dutch before Hackett scored on a putback and Burney added a three-point play, 50-28. Hackett scored again before Werner sank one of two foul shots and Beimel converted two foul shots, making the score 52-31. Connor sank two foul shots, 54-31, with Carrero scoring for the Dutch to make the final score 54-33.
The Dutch are now 6-3 overall and 0-1 in District 9 League play.
St. Marys returns to action Friday when they travel to Bradford to take on the Owls in another District 9 League contest.

The St. Marys Area junior varsity squad lost a 43-33 contest to the Raiders.
The Dutch took an 11-8 first-period lead and outscored Brookville 12-6 in the second period for a 23-14 halftime lead.
St. Marys outscored Brookville 8-6 in the third period. In the fourth quarter, Brookville outscored the Dutch 22-2 to win the game 43-33.
