The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling team saw their record slip to 2-4 on the season with a 53-18 loss to the Brookville Raiders last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
While the Dutch took a 15-6 lead through four matches, the only points St. Marys scored after that came on a 3-2 decision by Joe McLaughlin at 182 pounds over Tyler Dombroski.
“Brookville is as very good wrestling team. Even with some guys banged up, they wrestled well,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra.
“We improved tonight. We thought 120 and 145 would be toss-up matches. Evan Smith got a very nice win over Constable, who was 8-0 at 120 pounds, and Sam Miller wrestled tough in a loss at 145 pounds. One hundred eighty-two pounds was a rematch of the Big Dog finals, with Joey (McLaughlin) coming out on top tonight,” said Surra.
“Overall as a team we made them earn their points. We battled hard. We have to keep working and improving every day,” he said. “Next Tuesday we host Clearfield and that match has big District 9 implications.”
The match began at 113 pounds, where Dutchman Willie McGonnell pinned Brady Mineweaser at the 3:11 mark of their match. Evan Smith gave the Dutch a 9-0 lead when he recorded a 4-3 decision over Trey Constable.
Brookville got on the board when Daulton Zimmerman pinned Dylan Smith at the 1:24 mark of their 126-pound match.
Alex Coudriet gave the Dutch the 15-6 lead when he pinned Cole Clever at the 1:53 mark of their 132-pound bout.
Brookville’s Jimmy Miller recorded an 11-2 major decision over Tyler Yetzer at 138 pounds to make the score 15-10. At 145 pounds, Brodie Zacherl recorded an 8-0 major decision over Sam Miller to make the score 15-14. Zach Vroman pinned Bill Gabor at the 1:23 mark of their 152-pound match to give Brookville the 20-15 lead.
At 160 pounds, Brett Smith of the Raiders won by a 15-0 technical fall over Josh Cameroni at the 3:31 mark. At 170 pounds, Taylor Cudworth of Brookville pinned Ben Cheatle at the 1:30 mark of their match to give the Raiders a 31-15 lead.
Joe McLaughlin of the Dutch picked up a 3-2 decision over Tyler Dombroski at 182 pounds, making the score 31-18.
At 195 pounds, Logan Stout of the Raiders won by injury default over Derek Taylor. At 220 pounds, Jacob Cieleski won a 12-1 major decision over Gary Fledderman. At 285 pounds, Nathan Nosker of the Raiders pinned Mike Wolfel at the 2:46 mark of their match, making the score 47-18. In the final match of the evening, Brookville’s Devin Joiner pinned Ray Dent at the 2:33 mark of their 106-pound match.
The Dutch, now 2-4 on the season, return to action next Tuesday when they play host to the Clearfield Bisons. Junior high begins at 6 p.m., with the varsity scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
