Cameron County hands Lady Dutch 50-45 setback

The Cameron County Lady Raiders used an eight-point first-half advantage to hand the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch a 50-45 loss last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
Cameron County outscored St. Marys 23-15 in the first 16 minutes of play. In the second half, the Lady Dutch outscored Cameron County 30-27 to cut Cameron County’s final margin of victory to five points.
“We changed defenses at halftime but our focus is on defensive execution,” said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli.
“We were kind of outsized underneath tonight,” noted Hoohuli. Cameron County’s Kiley Lewis and Kayla Zoschg accounted for 26 of Cameron County’s 50 points, most underneath the bucket.
“We weren’t moving the ball in the first half and we couldn’t get out opportunities,” said Hoohuli. “We need the kids to do their (individual) jobs.”
St. Marys was led offensively by Adair Gennocro with 20 points on seven twos, one three and a three-for-three night from the foul line. Kiana Hoohuli scored 10 points on three field goals and a four-for-four night from the foul line.
Cameron County had four players in double figures, led by Kiley Lewis with 14 points on six field goals and a two-for-four night from the foul line. Kayla Zoschg scored 12 points on five field goals and a two-for-five night from the foul line. Olivio Guisto scored 11 points on two twos, one three and a four-for-four night from the foul line. Brooke Dunsmore scored 10 points on three field goals and a four-for-six night from the foul line.
Gennocro gave St. Marys the early 2-0 lead. Cameron County them scored nine unanswered points to go up 9-2 with 5:37 left in the first period. Gennocro then sank three foul shots and Jenna Anderson sank two foul shots to cut the Lady Raider lead to 9-7. Lewis sank two foul shots and Zoschg one, 12-7. Becky Krieg scored for the Lady Dutch, making it 12-9. Lewis and Olivia Guisto hit field goals to give Cameron County the 16-9 lead after one period.
Zoschg scored for Cameron County to open the second period. Gennocro scored twice to make it 18-14. Zoschg made one of two foul shots, then scored two field goals, 23-13. Hoohuli scored to cut the Cameron lead to 23-15 at the half.
Lewis and Hoohuli traded buckets to open the second half. Gennocro scored for St. Marys, 25-19. Guisto sank two foul shots and Zoschg added a field goal, 29-19. Hoohuli hit a two and Gennocro a three, 29-24. Lewis and Becky Krieg traded buckets before Guisto sank two foul shots. DeAnna Yost sank two foul shots for St. Marys. Brooke Dunsmore converted a three-point play for the Lady Raiders, making it 36-28 with 1:28 left in the period. Hoohuli sank two foul shots, with Lewis scoring for the Lady Raiders as they took a 38-30 lead after three periods.
Dunsmore scored twice in the fourth quarter, 42-30. Anderson hit a three and followed with a two, 42-35. Lewis hit a field goal for the Lady Raiders. Hoohuli converted two foul shots and Rachel Krieg scored for St. Marys, 44-39. Dunsmore converted one of two foul shots, 45-39. Gennocro cut the Lady Raider lead to 45-41 with a two. Zoschg scored for Cameron County and Shannon Sullivan sank a foul shot, 48-41. Gennocro and Lewis traded field goals, 50-43. A bucket by Yost made the final score 50-45 in favor of the Lady Raiders.

Game notes
The Lady Dutch are now 0-2 on the season. They will travel to Port Allegany tonight for a non-league encounter. Game times are 6 p.m. for junior varsity and 7:30 p.m. for varsity.

JV’s lose
The Lady Dutch junior varsity lost a 40-37 contest to the Lady Raiders.
St. Marys took a 9-5 first-period lead. Cameron County outscored St. Marys 18-9 in the second period for a 23-18 halftime lead.
The Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Raiders 9-7 in the third period. Both teams scored 10 fourth-quarter points as the Lady Raiders held on for the 40-37 win.
