Caregiver support group forming
Caring for a loved one at home can feel very stressful at times, overwhelming caregivers and making them feel like they have nowhere to turn for assistance or just a friendly ear to listen. In order to provide these resources and more, the Office of Human Services/Area Agency on Aging is establishing a Caregiver Support Group to provide a forum for discussion and give area residents information on resources and programs that can help ease the strain of being a caregiver. Jill Jovenitti, care manager, R.N., and ombudsman for the Office of Human Services and Area Agency on Aging that serves Elk, McKean, and Cameron County residents, said the support group meetings will be held every third Thursday of the month beginning on April 19 at 10 a.m. at the Fox Twp. Senior Center, 365 Main St., Kersey. No fee or registration is required to attend. According to Jovenitti, the group will help caregivers find a connection with other families dealing with similar situations and diseases; reduce the feelings of isolation that can arise when caring long hours or 24/7 for a loved one; help ease the physical and emotional burden of both the caregiver and receiver; share concerns, feelings and practical ideas in a supportive environment; and receive information on available services and support.
