Charles Raymond Carlson
Charles Raymond Carlson, 95, of 356 Toby Rd., Kersey, died Sunday evening Feb. 20, 2011 at the Lutheran Home in Kane. He was born Dec. 13, 1915 in Shawmut, son of the late Carl J. and Ida (Peterson) Carlson. In August of 1962, he married Marie Schreiber of Toby, who preceded him in death on Dec. 27, 2010.He was a graduate of the Kersey High School. He lived the majority of his life in Toby Valley. Initially he was a miner. He served in the U. S. Army in WWII, where he was wounded in Germany in the Huertgen Forest. After spending five months in the hospital in England, he returned to the U.S.A. and then using the GI Bill, attended and graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He then worked for the state of Pennsylvania as an accountant and later as a hospital administrator. He retired after 27 years of working for the state. He was a member of the Toby United Methodist Church and the Fox Township American Legion. He was an avid woodsman and gardener.He is survived by two nieces, Madeline Guthrie of Madison, Tenn., and Cynthia Grund-Cumlet of Greve, Denmark; and one nephew, Paul Johnson of New Castle. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Guthrie of Toby, Dorothy Grund of East Haven, Conn., and Edith Johnson of Ridgway.Funeral and Committal Services for Charles Raymond Carlson will be held at the Thompson Funeral Home, Ridgway, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Joni Williams, pastor of Toby United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Maria Lutheran Cemetery.Military honors will be accorded by the Fox Township American Legion Burial Detail.
