City opens meetings on 2011 budget

Members of city council held their first of three scheduled meetings regarding the 2011 city budget yesterday evening and plan to meet again tonight.
According to city manager Dave Greene, the currently proposed tax increase is about three and a half mills, though he noted that no figures have been agreed upon by council. He added that council members are currently trying to make concessions in the budget so that only a lesser increase would be required.
Carol Muhitch, city finance director, explained that each mill is worth about $208,000.
It was noted that the budget, in addition to containing three percent wage increases for police and city union employees based on their respective contracts, also contains a three percent wage increase for city management employees. The increase for city management employees will need to be approved by council members.
