CLARION - A second-half rally by the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch came up short last night at Clarion Universityâ€™s Memorial Stadium as the Clarion Area Bobcats came away with a 40-28 victory.
The Bobcats took a 33-7 halftime lead only to see the Dutch outscore Clarion by a 21-7 margin in the second half of play.
â€śThe game was lost in the first half but I am very proud of our effort in the second half,â€ť said St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm. â€śWe competed really well in the third and fourth quarters.â€ť
â€śClarion is a very good football team,â€ť added Schlimm.
The Dutchmen were led offensively by the rushing of Alex Feldbauer, who gained 199 yards on 26 carries and scored three touchdowns. Joe Luchini ran for 102 yards on nine carries and scored one touchdown.
Clarion was led by the play of quarterback John Katis, who completed nine of 15 passes for 148 yards. He threw two interceptions. Camron Kirkland gained 146 yards on seven carries while Damien Slike gained 98 yards on nine carries.
Dutchman Robbie Glass had a very good defensive night, coming up with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Joe Luchini and Cody Baker also recovered Clarion fumbles.
The game started with Clarion recovering the opening kickoff on the St. Marys 30 after the Dutch failed to cover it. Four plays later, T.J. Armstrong scored from two yards out. Antonio Troese added the PAT and the Bobcats were up 7-0 with 10:24 left in the first period.
The Dutch started their scoring drive on their own 27. Baker gained eight to the 35, with Feldbauer picking up six to the 41. Luchini was thrown for a yard loss. Clarion was flagged for defensive holding, putting the ball on the 50. A motion penalty on the Dutch moved it back to the 45. Feldbauer gained two yards on first down, with Baker being thrown for a two-yard loss on third down. The Dutch punt was fielded on the Clarion 20 with the returner fumbling the ball and Luchini recovering on the Clarion 21. Feldbauer picked up three on the first down. Baker was held for no gain. Feldbauer picked up six to the 12 and two to the 10 and a first down. Feldbauer was held for no gain on first down. After an incomplete pass on second down, Luchini gained seven to the three. On fourth and goal, Feldbauer bulled his way into the endzone. Christian Kellerâ€™s PAT tied the game at 7-all with 4:09 left in the first quarter.
Clarion came right back with a four-play drive that covered 60 yards, 42 of them on a run by Kirkland. Katis scored from two yards out. The PAT was wide right as the Bobcats led 13-7 with 2:52 left in the first quarter.
The Dutch started from their own 36 and got as far as the Clarion 36 before being forced to punt on the first play of the second quarter. Clarion took over on their own 21. After a five-yard gain by Armstrong on first down, Slike broke free on a 79-yard touchdown run, giving Clarion the 13-7 lead with 11:33 left in the first half.
St. Marys was forced to punt on their next possession. On first down, Clarion fumbled, with Glass recovering on the Clarion 45. Again the Dutch offense stalled and they punted. The punt return was fumbled and Glass recovered again for the Dutch on the Clarion 16-yard line. St. Marys turned the ball over on downs.
On the Bobcatsâ€™ next possession, Katis connected on three of three passes to put the ball on the SMA 27. Kirkland gained 25 to the two with Armstrong going in with 2:20 left in the first half. Katis found Slike for the two-point PAT as the Bobcats led 25-7.
The Dutch fumbled on first down. It took Clarion four plays before Kirkland scored on a four-yard run. Armstrong added the two-point PAT and the Bobcats led 33-7 at the half.
An interception by Glass halted Clarionâ€™s first possession of the second half. St. Marys punted on their next series, with Glass picking off another interception to halt the Bobcats as he returned the ball from the 50 to the 27. On first down, Coudriet hit Tyger with a 10-yard pass to the 17. Felbauer gained a yard, with Baker being held for no gain. After an incomplete pass on second down, Baker picked up six to the 10. Feldbauer went the final 10 yards to make the score 33-13. Kellerâ€™s PAT made the score 33-14, with 6:24 left in the third period.
The Dutch defense stopped the Bobcats on their next possession. An interception halted the Dutch drive at the Clarion 29. Five plays later, Slike scored from 14 yards out. Troese made the score 40-14 with the PAT with eight seconds left in the third quarter.
Tyger returned the kickoff from the 22 to the 27. On first down, Luchini outraced the Clarion defenders to the endzone, making the score 40-20 as the third period ended. Kellerâ€™s PAT made it 40-21.
The Dutch defense stopped Clarion at the four-yard line. On first down, Feldbauer broke free on a 96-yard scamper, making the score 40-27. Kellerâ€™s PAT made the score 40-28 with 9:30 left in the game.
The teams traded punts as time ran out with the Bobcats on top 40-28.
The Dutchmen are now 2-4 on the season. They are 0-3 in the KSAC Big School Division.
St. Marys returns to action next Friday night when they take on the Moniteau Warriors at Dutch Country Stadium. This will be Homecoming for the Dutch with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
