Clearfield Bisons defeat Dutchmen 28-7 for 9-AAA title

DuBOIS - The Clearfield Bisons defeated the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 28-7 score Saturday afternoon at DuBois’ E.J. Mansell Stadium to capture the 2011 District 9 Class AAA football championship.
Clearfield will now meet Johnstown, the District 6 representative, Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Mansion Park in Altoona.
Clearfield took a 21-0 halftime lead. Each team scored a touchdown in the second half.
“I am really proud of my guys,” said St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm.
“Our season has had some incredible highs and some real lows but such is life,” said the coach.
“I think our program is better now than it was at the beginning of the year and I credit my seniors for that,” said Schlimm.
“I give a lot of credit to Clearfield. They are a good football team. We couldn’t win at the line of scrimmage and that’s why they are 9-1,” noted Schlimm.
“We played hard the whole game. At halftime we told the kids to go out and play the game and have fun,” added coach Schlimm.
The Dutch offense was led by Brian Merritt with 102 yards on 10 carries. Justin Quiggle was next with 80 yards on eight carries.
Clearfield was led by the running of Beau Swales who finished the game with 215 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. Quarterback Curtis Frye gained 104 yards on 12 carries. He was two-of-eight in the passing department for 50 yards and a touchdown. Christian Lezzer was one-for-one for 18 yards and a touchdown.
The Dutch won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. On the first offensive play of the game, Clearfield fumbled with Dutchman Luke Schreiber recovering on the Clearfield 33. The Dutch however were unable to pick up a first down and punted with Clearfield taking over on their own 20. Lezzer picked up a yard on first down to the 21. On second down, Swales broke free for a 79-yard touchdown run to give the Bisons the 6-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the first quarter. Spencer Herrington split the uprights to make the score 7-0.
The Dutch started a drive from their own 24. Cody Baker gained three yards on first down with Merritt picking up 13 to the 40. Baker gained four on first down and five on second down. He gained six on third down giving St. Marys a first and 10 at the Clearfield 45. Baker gained a yard on first down. Merritt picked up six more to the 38. Baker was held for no gain on third down forcing the Dutch to punt. Quiggle’s punt went into the endzone as the Bisons took over on their own 20.
The teams exchanged punts with the Bisons taking over on their own 34. On first down, Frye picked up 27 yards to the Dutchmen’s 39. On first down, Frye hit Lezzer with a 39 yard touchdown pass giving Clearfield the 13-0 lead with 2:44 left in the first period. Herrington’s PAT made it 14-0.
St. Marys’ next drive was halted by an interception by Trey Jordan on the Dutchmen’s 47. Clearfield moved to the 40 before punting on the first play of the second quarter.
The Dutchmen’s next possession also ended with an interception by Jordan on his own 41. From there it took the Bisons six plays to score as Swales scored from nine yards out with 8:51 left in the first half giving Clearfield the 20-0 lead. Herrington’s PAT made it 21-0.
On their next possession the Dutchmen got as far as the Clearfield 45 before punting. Clearfield drove to the St. Marys 35 before the Dutch defense stiffened and St. Marys took over on downs. The Dutch ran three plays as the first half ended with Clearfield on top 21-0.
The second half opened with St. Marys taking over on their own 29 following the kickoff. On first down Baker gained three yards to the 32. On second down Quiggle broke free on a 68 yard scamper for a touchdown making the score 21-6 with 11:13 left in the third period. Scott Barber added the PAT, 21-7.
The teams traded punts with Clearfield taking over on the St. Marys 45. The Bisons moved to the St. Marys 25 before the Dutch defense again stopped Clearfield as the Dutch took over on downs. St. Marys went three and out before punting. Clearfield took over on the St. Marys 39 yard line. It took them seven plays to go 39 yards as Lezzer hit Dylan Graham with an 18-yard touchdown pass. Herrington gave Clearfield the 28-7 lead with 19.2 seconds left in the third period.
Baker picked up three yards on the last play of the third quarter. Quiggle gained three yards to the 37 before Aul was sacked for a six-yard loss as the Dutch punted. Clearfield ran off a 11-play drive that took the from their own 36 to the Dutchmen’s 18 before they ran out of downs.
St. Marys took over with 5:28 left in the game. Aul was sacked for a 10-yard loss. A delay of game penalty moved it back to the three yard line. Merritt broke free for a 22-yard run out to the 25 on second down. Baker gained four yards to the 29 for a first down. After an incomplete pass on first down, second and third down running plays resulted in losses back to the 18-yard line forcing St. Marys to punt.
Clearfield started on their own 42. They picked up a first down then took a knee to preserve their 28-7 victory.

Game notes
The Dutchmen finished the season with a 5-5 record. They finished 5-4 in the KSAC. They were 2-2 in the KSAC Large School Division.

Playing in their final game for the Dutchmen were seniors David Aul, Scott Barber, Jusson Glatt, Sam Guido, Jimmy McClain, Brian Merritt, Justin Quiggle, Luke Schreiber, Trenton Schreiber and Jimmy Werner.
