The Elk County Commissioners announced during yesterday morning's meeting that they had recently attended a meeting with state Sen. Joseph Scarnati, state Rep. Matt Gabler, and the new Speaker of the House, state Rep. Sam Smith, at Scarnati's office in Brockway.
“This was concerning the Marcellus Shale drilling and the commitment we've made to help with both sides of the industry,” said Commissioner Dan Freeburg. “We had members from C.A.R.E.S. (Citizens Advocating Responsible Environmental Stewardship) in here a few weeks ago and we see the economic benefits and also want to be sensitive to the concern to the environment.
“The water authority [Brockway Water Authority] wanted our presence there because a good bit of the watershed is in Elk County and what came out of it is that we had a great discussion.”
According to Freeburg, the discussion was proactive and was focused on protecting the watershed.
“The concern with everyone on the committee, as well as the C.A.R.E.S. group, is the protection of our water and that is something that everyone is working diligently to protect,” said Commissioner June Sorg.
