November 12, 2011

At Thursday's workshop of the St. Marys Area School District Board, Superintendent Ann Kearney in written comments congratulated SMAHS students Adair Gennocro, who took third place in the PIAA Cross Country Finals' 5K race; and Liz Dollinger, who was accepted into the U.S. Marine Corps Band. Dollinger will now be headed for basic training at Parris Island, S.C. Kearney said that this marks the first time a St. Marys student has been a part of the band.
Also noted were the SMAHS band's first place finish at the District XI competition held this past month. This is the eighth time the band has taken first place at the competition.
Kearney said that the Veterans Day assembly was held Thursday. Major Chris Casey spoke with students about the concept of duty. He spoke with the students about the duties they have even at their age and how a sense of duty can be carried into adulthood. Kearney said the program was well received by students.
Kearney also said that a letter was received from the state Auditor General's office, regarding a recent Performance Audit Report (PAR).
"This is the first time there have been no findings or observations. There have always been four or five minor things," Kearney said.
She added that the letter stated that the district's buildings are safe and in compliance with code and regulations.
