The Coudersport Falcons used a 14-for-14 effort from the foul line in the fourth quarter to defeat the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 59-51 score last night at the Dutch Oven.
St. Marys held a slim 40-38 lead going into the final eight minutes of play. In the fourth quarter, the Falcons outscored the Dutch by a 21-11 margin to come out on top.
â€śWe struggled from the foul line tonight but it was our inability to stop their penetration. They were able to penetrate too easily,â€ť said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
â€śWe had some nice runs, but we were not able to extend them. Their guard play was strong and it hurt us.
â€śWe need to learn from this loss - learn from the experience and get ready for our next game.â€ť
The St. Marys offense was led by Dylan Reigel with 21 points on six twos and three threes. Bob Vollmer scored 10 points on four field goals and a two-for-two night from the foul line.
Coudersport was led by Tim McCusker with 16 points on three twos, two threes and a four-for-four night from the foul line. Jason Gibson finished with 14 points on four twos, a three and a three-for-four night from the foul line. John Michael Rigas scored 10 points on three field goals and a four-for-four night from the foul line.
The early goings of last nightâ€™s game was a back-and-forth affair, with Coudy opening the game with a foul shot by Taylor Hathaway. Justin Quiggle gave the Dutch the lead with a field goal. Gibson scored for the Falcons, with Quiggle converting a three-point play, 5-3. A bucket by Bob Vollmer gave St. Marys the 7-3 lead.
Coudersport then scored seven unanswered points to go up 10-7. Vollmer and McCusker exchanged buckets with Rigas scoring for Coudersport, giving the Falcons the 14-9 lead after the first quarter.
Gibson scored to open the second period. St. Marys went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 16-16 with 5:01 left in the half: Reigel hit a three, while Werner hit a foul shot and Vollmer scored three points in the run. Christopher Rigas scored for Coudersport and Reigel hit a two and a three, 21-18. McCusker tied the game with a three. Vollmer scored for the Dutch, 23-21. Hathaway converted a three-point play for the Falcons to give them a 24-23 lead. A bucket by Werner gave the Dutch the 25-24 halftime lead.
Quiggle scored for the Dutch, 27-24. A three by Kevin Wolfinger and two by McCusker made it 29-27. Ryan Mancuso tied the game with two foul shots with 4:30 left in the period. The teams traded points and the lead. A bucket by Reigel with 1:15 left made the score 37-34. He added a three with 25 seconds left to make the score 40-36. Gibson scored with nine seconds left to cut the Dutch lead to 40-38 with one quarter left.
Reigel tied the game at 45 midway through the fourth quarter. Coudersport went up 47-45. Werner converted a foul shot, 47-46. Coudersport converted four foul shots to make the score 51-46 with 2:11 left. Vollmer sank a foul shot, 51-47. Two foul shots by McCusker made it 53-47. Quiggle scored for the Dutch before Rigas converted two foul shots. Reigel scored a field goal before Coudersport sank four foul shots to win the game 59-51.
The Dutchmen are now 4-1 on the year.
They will return to action next Wednesday in the Elk County Boysâ€™ Holiday Tournament. Their opponent will be announced Thursday.

The St. Marys Area junior varsity squad defeated Coudersport by a 39-23 score.
St. Marys took a 13-5 first-period lead. Both teams scored five second-quarter points, giving the Dutch the 18-10 lead at the half.
The Dutch outscored the Falcons 11-6 in the third and 10-7 in the fourth to win the game 39-23.
