ST. MARYS - Students from both Elk and Cameron counties competed in the Special Olympics track and field meet held at Dutch Country Stadium on Tuesday.
Event organizers Nancy Hoffman, life skills teacher at St. Marys Area High School, and Angie Sorg, physical therapist for Seneca Highlands Intermediate Unit 9, which services Elk, McKean, and Potter counties, said the event is an opportunity for many special needs children and adults to have "their moment to shine."
"Kids without disabilities have opportunities to feel success and sometimes these guys don't feel that success all the time and maybe don't have the same self-esteem because they're not getting success in other things, because maybe school's hard or whatever it might be," Hoffman said.
