It was a cool and breezy fall day Monday at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course, but for the Elk County Catholic Crusader golf team, the weather and everything else was just about perfect as the Crusaders edged the Ridgway Elkers 335-336 to claim the District 9 Class AA team title.
Elk Catholic's foursome consisted of Elliott Struble, Mitchell Struble, Drew Meyer, and Jess Jaynes. The D9 team title is the first for second-year Crusader head coach George Schneider.
"I'm proud of the kids. They've been playing well all year, and I'm glad they can get a District title," Schneider said. "Hopefully we can go on to the next round and do some damage there too."
For the Crusaders, Elliott Struble shot a 75, Mitchell Struble had an 82, Drew Meyer carded an 85, and Jess Jaynes finished with a 93 for a team score of 335.
For the Elkers, Josh Roselli had a 75, T.J. Schlimm recorded an 81, Jake Klawuhn shot an 89, and Jesse Reynolds carded a 91 for a team score of 336.
"Good competition today again, obviously, from Ridgway. We've been neck-and-neck all year. We've been coming out ahead on that one. We've got to polish up before the next round and make sure we can advance to States," Schneider said.
Coming in third in team points was Clarion with 358, followed by Brookville and Keystone with 359, Cranberry 368, Johnsonburg 391, and A-C Valley 392.
Punxsutawney and Bradford were the only two teams in the AAA competition, and Punxsutawney ended up taking the title with a score of 338 to Bradford's 358.
The Elk Catholic and Punxsutawney teams will each compete in sub-regional qualifiers to advance to the PIAA state team championships at Heritage Hills. The Elk Catholic will compete in a sub-regional with the District 10 champion, while Punxsutawney will compete in a sub-regional with teams from District 5, 6, 8, and 10.
Co-medalists for the day among the individual AA golfers were Elk Catholic's Elliott Struble and Ridgway's Josh Roselli with four-over-par rounds of 75. Struble and Roselli will lead the field of 14 AA and 7 AAA golfers who will compete again on Saturday in an additional 18 holes at Bavarian Hills to determine this year's 8 AA and 2 AAA regional qualifiers.
