Crusaders advance with win over Oswayo Valley

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders opened play in the District 9 Class A boys’ basketball tournament with a 67-51 victory over the Oswayo Valley Green Wave Wednesday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Crusaders will now meet the Coudersport Falcons Friday night at the ECCHS gym. Coudersport defeated the Northern Potter Panthers last night by a 49-33 score. The start time is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Crusaders were able to use a strong first half as they scored 33 points in the first 16 minutes while limiting the Green Wave to nine. The second half saw the Green Wave outscore the Crusaders by a 44-34 margin, but they were unable to overcome Elk’s first- half lead.
“Our first half was good. We guarded well and communicated well,” said ECCHS coach Aaron Straub.
“In the second half we lost our focus defensively,” added Straub.
The Crusaders were led offensively by Ricky Pearsall with 19 points on two twos, three threes and a six-for-eight night from the foul line. Ben Daghir was next with nine points, followed by Tyler Herzing, Darren Simons and Luke Daghir, all with eight points.
Trevor Howard led Oswayo Valley with 16 points on eight field goals. Thomas Gross added 15 points on three twos, two threes and a three-for-six night from the foul line. Taylor Stanley was next with nine points.
The Crusaders outrebounded the Green Wave by a 24-19 margin. Pearsall led Elk with six, while Mitchel Haberberger had five. Howard had six caroms to lead the Green Wave.
The game opened with Nicholas Gross hitting a three for Oswayo Valley. Elk responded with an 11-0 run as Herzing hit a two, Pearsall a two and a foul shot, Ben Daghir a three and Pearsall a three, 11-3. Camden Nolan and Trevor Howard scored for OV, 11-7. Eric Wehler and Luke Daghir scored for ECC, making the score 15-7 at the end of the first period.
Herzing scored off a steal to open the second period. Trevor Howard scored for OV, 17-9. The Crusaders held the Green Wave scoreless the rest of the half while they scored 16 points, as Elk opened a 33-9 halftime lead. Simons led Elk with eight points in the run while Luke Daghir, Ben Daghir, Ben Wortman and Michael Jacob each added two.
Stanley hit a three for Oswayo Valley to open the second half. Pearsall sank a foul shot while Ben Daghir added a two, 36-12. Nolan scored for OV, with Pearsall hitting a three for Elk. Buckets by Stanley and Howard made it 39-18. Pearsall sank two foul shots and Herzing added a two, making the score 43-18 with 4:51 left in the period. Howard and Ben Daghir traded buckets. Howard and Nolan scored for the Green Wave, 45-24. Luke Daghir hit a field goal with Nicholas Dietze sinking two foul shots for the Green Wave, 47-26. Ben Crowe scored for Elk with Nicholas Gross sinking two foul shots for OV. Ben Wortman converted a three-point play with 55 seconds left in the third period, giving ECC the 52-28 lead. Nolan and Nicholas Gross scored for Oswayo Valley, making the score 52-32 at the end of three quarters.
Gross scored to open the fourth quarter. Simons hit a two and Pearsall hit a three, 57-35. Gross and Herzing traded buckets, 59-37. Howard hit a field goal and Stanley scored four points to make it 59-43 with 4:27 left. Each team scored eight points the remainder of the game as the Crusaders advanced with the 67-51 win.

Game notes
The Crusaders are now 21-4 on the year and will play host to Coudersport Friday night at 7 p.m. at the ECCHS gym.

Coudersport defeated Northern Potter 49-33. In other Class A games, North Clarion beat Clarion-Limestone 78-72, Johnsonburg downed Cameron County 61-3, Union defeated Clarion 67-55, DuBois Central beat Cranberry 81-55 and Ridgway eliminated AC Valley 57-49.
