The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team withstood a four-run first inning by the Kane Wolves Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park as they rebounded for a 13-7 victory over the Wolves.
Kane jumped out to the 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Elk Catholic responded with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning. The Crusaders would score four in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth for a 13-4 lead. Kane scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh, making the final score 13-7.
The Wolves had eight hits in the contest, led by Jeff Kocjancicâ€™s home run and single. Andrew Peterson added a home run, while Tyler Burdick tripled and Tyler Ennis, Andrew Pierson, Logan Kumher and Nate Allen all singled.
Elk Catholic had 13 hits in the contest. Ivan Wortman and Brandon Schlimm each had three singles. Pat Brennen doubled, with Vincent Jacob, Dan Singer, Shea Meyer, Brock McCullough, Wes Brennen and Ben Cortina all getting singles.
Dan Singer started on the mound for the Crusaders, working to only four batters and giving up four hits and four runs. Ben Cortina worked six innings of relief, giving up two hits, walking five and striking out eight. Ivan Wortman worked the seventh inning for ECC, giving up two hits, walking one and striking out one.
Dan Park started on the mound for Kane, going 2 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and walking three. Matt Flickinger worked to three batters, giving up two singles. Andrew Pierson worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and striking out two.
â€śBen (Cortina) pitched well for us. He had a good outing for his first time on the mound this season,â€ť said ECCHS coach Tom Zampogna. â€śWe played well offensively, but defensively we made a few mistakes. It was good to get the win after the game in DuBois on Monday.â€ť
â€śKane is a young team and so are we,â€ť he added.
The top of the first inning saw Ennis and Pierson single for Kane. Kocjancic followed with a three-run home run to right field. Andrew Peterson followed with a solo home run to left as Kane took the 4-0 lead. In the home half of the inning, Jacob reached base on an error and moved to third on the play. Jacob scored on a squeeze bunt by Pat Brennen. With one out, Wortman singled and Joe McLaughlin walked. Jack Herzing reached base on an error. A single by McCullough scored both Wortman and McLaughlin, cutting the Kane lead to 4-3.
Kane left a runner stranded in the top of the second. With one out in the home half of the inning, Schlimm singled and Jacob walked. A double by Pat Brennen scored both Schlimm and Jacob. Singer reached base on an error, then stole second. Brennen scored on a throwing error. Wortman singled, sending Singer to third. A sacrifice fly to left by McLaughlin scored Singer to give Elk the 7-4 lead.
The Wolves went down in order in the third inning. McCullough led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. He scored on a single by Cortina. Cortina moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Schlimm. A single by Jacob scored courtesy runner Mitch Oâ€™Neill. Jacob stole second and third and scored when Pat Brennen reached base on an error. Brennen stole second and scored on a single by Singer. Singer stole second and scored on a single by Wortman, giving Elk the 12-4 lead.
The fourth inning found Kane going down in order. Wes Brennen led off the home half of the inning with a single. With one out, Schlimm singled, sending Brennen to third. A sacrifice fly to left to Jacob scored Brennen as Elk led 13-4.
Kane scored twice in the fifth when Kocjancic reached base on an error and stole second. With one out, Kumher walked. With two outs, Tyler Burdick tripled, scoring both Kocjancic and Kumher and cutting Elkâ€™s lead to 13-6. The Crusaders left two runners on base in their half of the inning.
Kane went in order in the sixth, while Elk left a man on base. In the top of the seventh, the Wolves scored a run when Kocjancic singled. With two outs, Allen singled, scoring Kocjancic to make the final score 13-7 in favor of Elk Catholic.
The Crusaders are now 5-2 on the year and will travel to Curwensville Thursday.
