The Elk County Catholic Crusaders used a big second quarter to hand the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen a 52-35 District 9 League loss last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
Elk held an 11-10 lead after the first quarter. They scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to open a 23-10 lead with 2:13 left in the half. They led 26-14 at the half. The Crusaders outscored the Dutch 26-21 in the second half.
“It was a good win, an important win,” said ECCHS coach Aaron Straub. “I thought we played really well in the first half, as our team defensive execution worked. In the third quarter we hit another offensive lull but were able to battle through that. I thought we handled the ball real well in the front court but not in the back court. We have to clean that up.”
“Tomorrow night we have an opportunity to play a real good team. We have to play hard tomorrow night,” Straub said.
“I thought Hank Cappiello and Mitchell Vallone did a heckuva a job on (St. Marys Area’s) Justin Quiggle,” he noted. Quiggle was held to five points in the contest.
The Crusaders were led offensively by Brock McCullough with 18 points on nine field goals. Ben Wortman added 13 points on three twos, a three and a four-for-six night from the foul line.
Jimmy Werner led the Dutchmen with 10 points on four field goals and a two-for-two night from the foul line. Michael Fox was next with nine points.
“You try to tell players that you get out what you put in. Some of the results of this season is the result of a lack of a productive offseason,” said Dutch coach Mark Guido.
“I am extremely proud of Mike Fox. He gives 110 percent every practice, every game and never complains,” added Guido.
McCullough gave ECC the early 4-0 lead. Werner scored two field goals to knot the game at 4-all. ECC’s Wortman hit a field goal before Quiggle hit a three for St. Marys, with McCullough scoring for Elk. Dutchman Sam Guido and Elk’s Brandon Schlimm traded treys at the end of the first quarter as Elk led 11-10.
The Crusaders opened the second quarter on a 12-0 run. McCullough and Schlimm each had six points in the stretch. A bucket by Quiggle with 1:53 left in the half made the score 23-12. Wortman hit a three to make it 26-12. Quinn Cunningham scored for the Dutch, making the halftime score 26-14 in favor of the Crusaders.
A foul shot and a field goal by Fox cut ECC’s lead to 26-17. McCullough scored for Elk before Fox hit a three and Werner added a two, 28-22. A bucket by Brandon Vollmer made it 28-24. Werner sank two intentional foul shots to cut Elk’s lead to 28-26 with 3:22 left in the quarter. The Crusaders scored the final seven points of the third period to go up 35-26 with one quarter remaining. Wortman scored four points and Clayton Housler three for ECC.
McCullough and Cunningham traded buckets to open the fourth quarter. McCullough scored on a putback to give Elk a 39-28 lead. Justin Beimel sank two foul shots and Werner scored on a putback, 39-32.
