It felt more like football weather than baseball Friday afternoon at Berwind Park, where the Elk County Catholic Crusaders handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen an 8-1 setback.
The Crusaders were the first to get on the scoreboard as they were able to score twice in the second inning and twice in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. They were able to add four runs in the fifth inning.
“Ben (Daghir) set the tone for the game with his good outing. We were able to get two runs in the second to go on top,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt.
“St. Marys hits the ball and you have to hit the ball with them if you are going to win. But Ben Daghir did a great job today,” said the coach.
“But there is a lot of baseball left,” he added.
The Crusaders had six hits in the contest, led by Joe McLaughlin’s triple. Pat Brennen doubled, while Ricky Pearsall had two singles. Luke Daghir and Brock McCullough each had singles.
The Dutch had seven hits in the contest. Ryan Uhl had a double, while Branden Tyger, Brandon Vollmer, Nate Geist, Robert Watts and Justin Quiggle all singled.
“We just weren’t here today. We might have been looking past them a little bit to our doubleheader tomorrow and our seven games next week,” said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato.
“But you have to tip your hat to Ben (Daghir). He knows these guys and threw a good game,” added Azzato.
