Recruitment and retention continues to plague fire departments throughout the U.S. including the St. Marys Crystal Fire Department.
Fire Chief Bill Kraus reported this challenge along with overhauls he believes need to be made in training requirements during a recent St. Marys City Council meeting.
While the number of volunteer firefighters is declining, the age of volunteer firefighters is increasing. This is evident as the average age of CFD firefighters ranges from 40 to 50 years old, proving a need to recruit younger members.
In an effort to fill the void within the department, CFD brought back retired members who are a big help.
"Any kind of help we can get we certainly appreciate it," Kraus said.
