Cut your energy costs today

Today is National Cut Your Energy Cost Awareness Day. With unseasonably warm temperatures heating up our winter, and the approaching backlash of this warmth, now is a perfect time to start cutting your energy costs.
Jay Burke from Burkes Ace Home Center is certified in heat loss and heat design. Burke said the three biggest problems with heat loss in the home are foundation problems, faulty or missing insulation, and drafts.
"Most houses in the area are constructed with stone or concrete block. If one foot of block is showing, you can lose as much heat as one floor of the house. Foam board insulation can be used to cover the exposed areas," Burke said.
Missing insulation should be replaced immediately. Charles "Jeff" Bonifay of Elk Custom Homes Contracting indicated that "spray foam insulation is the best kind."
"It can cut energy costs by 60 percent, create a moisture barrier and increase structural integrity."
Drafts cause your home to lose heat, but you can fix this problem with tips from energysaver.gov. Turn on all the vents in your home that vent inside to out, such as the bathroom and kitchen vents, to depressurize your home.
