Doreen A. McCartan

January 17, 2013

Doreen A. McCartan, 71, of Newark, Ohio, died at Licking Memorial Hospital with her family by her side on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013.
She was born in St. Marys on Nov. 7, 1941, daughter of Ruth A. (Gerber) Meyer and the late Arnold J. Meyer.
For many years Doreen worked in the cafeteria at Newark Catholic High School and was a volunteer in the cafeteria at St. Francis de Sales Elementary. She operated the Extended Day Program at St. Francis when it was first developed until she joined The Eye Site, where she worked as an office assistant for Dr. H. Rogers Shay and the Doctors Dietz until her retirement in 2003.
As a woman of great faith, she was actively involved with her church parish of St. Francis de Sales, where she was a Eucharistic Minister and member of the Ministry of Comfort. She would greet you with a smile and offer kind words, which led to the many longtime friendships that she held dearly.  She was also an active member with LMH Twig 8, where she worked in the apparel department for the hospital gift shop.
Above all, she cherished her family and her grandchildren. She fully embraced her role as “Grammy” and never missed an opportunity to attend their school activities, cheer them on during their sporting events, or simply cuddle with them on the couch while they enjoyed a glass of her homemade lemonade.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne and Ray King, and Melanie and Randy Kelley; five grandchildren, Ashlie, Courtney, and Carli Kelley, and Kyle and Leah King; three great-grandchildren, Lailah, Liahna, and Landon Saunders, all of Newark; and her siblings and their spouses, Paul and Jeanne Meyer, Donald and Nancy Meyer, Timothy and Marsha Meyer, James and Donna Meyer, Kathleen and James Hoffman, and Marilyn and Edward Gladysiewski, all of St. Marys, and Carol and Clyde Salandra of Brockway; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her father, Doreen was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Robert McCartan, in October 1992.
A Funeral Mass for Doreen A. McCartan will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, with the Reverend JCP Sullivan, parish priest, celebrating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Friends and family may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20 at the Reed-Egan Funeral Home, 141 Green Wave Dr., Newark, where a vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m.
The family requests that memorials be made to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 66 Granville St., Newark, OH 43055; or LMH Twig #8, 1320 West Main St., Newark, OH 43055.
