Dr. Joshua Robert Schmidt, 29, of Clinton Township, Mich., and formerly of St. Marys, died at his home on Monday, August 22, 2011, surrounded by friends and family after a courageous five-year battle against cancer.
Joshua was born to Dr. Robert Joseph and Constance Moore Schmidt in Pittsburgh on February 26, 1982. He married Erin Brianne McCarthy of Orange Township, Ohio, on December 30, 2006.
Joshua graduated from St. Marys Area High School in 2000. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Case Western Reserve University in 2004 and his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009, with honors in Internal Medicine. He was a resident in Internal Medicine at Millcreek Community Hospital in Erie from 2009 until 2011, and he recently became a resident in Radiology at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center, Mount Clemens, Mich.
Throughout his life, Josh excelled in academics, athletics, and as a leader. At St. Marys Area High School, he was a two-time member of the National Honor Society. He was a four-year letter winner in soccer and wrestling, and as a senior he captained PIAA District IX Championship teams in both sports. He was also the 1999-2000 PIAA District IX Champion in wrestling at 189 lbs. and a qualifier for the PIAA State Championship. During his college wrestling career at CWRU, Joshua was a two-time NCAA Division III Regional Champion, a three-time qualifier for the NCAA National Tournament, and a three-time NCAA Academic All-American.
While Joshua resided in St. Marys, he attended Shiloh Presbyterian Church, where he was confirmed on February 24, 1997. Joshua enjoyed traveling the world and spending time with his family, friends and loved ones.
Along with Erin, his wife of four years, and his parents, Joshua is survived by his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Reed Moore of Bethel Park;Â two brothers, Nathaniel (Jennie) of Ridgway and Nicholas (Lynette) of Macedonia, Ohio; two sisters, Alexis (John) SzymanskiÂ of Pittsburgh and Johanna of St. Marys; parents-in-law Michael and Suzanne McCarthy of Lewis Center, Ohio; brothers in-law Sean (Melissa) and Jared, both of Columbus, Ohio; three nieces, Persephone and Adalena Schmidt and Ella McCarthy; and many uncles, aunts, cousins and loved ones.
Joshua was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, George C. Moore, and by his paternal grandparents, Robert W. and Thelma F. Schmidt.
Friends and family of Dr. Joshua Robert Schmidt are welcome at 2630 West Liberty Avenue, Dormont, 412-531-4000, on Friday from 7-9 p.m. and on Saturday from 12-2:30 p.m., where a service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Shiloh Presbyterian Church will host a memorial service on Saturday, September 3 at 1 p.m. Interment will take place in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery.
