The DuBois Area Beavers handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen a 41-20 setback on Friday night in a game played at Dutch Country Stadium.
The game was a defensive struggle early on, as neither team scored in the opening quarter. Then DuBois put together a couple of second-period drives to score twice. The Beavers scored once in the third quarter, then in the final period of play when a total of six touchdowns were put on the board, four of them coming within the first four minutes of the period.
â€śWe didnâ€™t play well enough to win tonight,â€ť said Coach Joe Schlimm of the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch. â€śOur defense wasnâ€™t up to par and offensively we never really got going until the final period of play.â€ť
â€śWe were outplayed tonight on both sides of the ball, and you canâ€™t expect to win when that happens,â€ť added Schlimm. â€śWe will have to regroup after this game and get back on track for next weekâ€™s encounter.â€ť
Offensively the St. Marys squad came up with 262 yards (180 rushing and 82 passing) against the DuBois squad, while the DuBois Beavers had 412 yards (291 rushing and 121 passing).
Brad Yetzer led the St. Marys offense on Friday with 58 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown, while passing for 82 yards and a touchdown. Brian Merritt was next for the Dutch with 57 rushing yards, 41 passing yards and a receiving touchdown. Kevin Hoy finished with 39 yards and a touchdown, while Kyle Schneider came up with 24 yards. Justin Quiggle, who was injured early in the first period, finished with two yards.
DuBois was paced by Shawn Newpher with 196 yards and two touchdowns, followed by Max Hine with 65 yards rushing, 24 yards passing and a receiving touchdown. John Kane had an 85-yard touchdown on a kickoff return. Sean Sleigh had 26 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Jimmy Werner had an interception for the Dutch, while Kyle Schneider had a fumble recovery on a hit on the quarterback by Werner that forced the fumble.
The first quarter of play found the two teams exchanging punts, as neither team was able to get any offense going. The period ended with the score at 0-0.
DuBois had the ball to start the second period and was moving down the field before Werner intercepted a pass on the Dutch 40 and returned it downfield to about the 30. A penalty moved the ball back to the Dutch 49.
St. Marys drove the ball to the DuBois 27 before Yetzerâ€™s pass was intercepted on the one-yard line. DuBois then marched 99 yards in just six plays to hit paydirt. The touchdown came on a Sleigh to Newell pass for 16 yards. Hine split the uprights to make it 7-0 with 6:32 left in the half.
St. Marys moved the ball to the DuBois 24-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. This time the Beavers went 76 yards in nine plays to score with six seconds left in the half. Sleigh ran the ball in from a yard out to make the score 13-0 at the half as the PAT failed.
St. Marys failed to score on their opening drive of the second half, turning the ball over on a punt. DuBois took over on their own 20 and drove 80 yards in 11 plays to score for the third time in the game. The touchdown came on a 23-yard pass from Sleigh to Hine. Sleigh then ran in the two-point conversion to make it 21-0.
Following an exchange of fumbles, the Dutch took over on the DuBois 49. They moved the ball to the 23 when time ran out in the period. Two plays into the final period, the Dutch scored on a 23-yard pass from Yetzer to Merritt to make it 21-7 (Scott Barber made the PAT) with 11:46 left in the game.
John Kane took the Dutch kickoff, faked a handoff and went 85 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-7 with 11:30 left in the game.
St. Marys took the DuBois kickoff and marched 71 yards in six plays to score their second TD of the game. Kevin Hoy carried the ball in from a yard out to make it 28-14 as Barber made the PAT.
DuBois downed the Dutch kickoff on their own 30-yard line and on the first play from scrimmage, Newpher broke through the St. Marys defense and went 70 yards for the touchdown and a 35-14 lead with 8:33 left in the game.
On their next possession the Dutchmen drove 76 yards in eight plays to hit paydirt on a 39-yard run by Yetzer to make it 35-20 with 5:06 left to play.
Following a DuBois punt, the Dutch took over on their own 32, but a penalty pushed it back to the 18. St. Marys turned the ball over on down to the DuBois squad with about two minutes left in the game. DuBois then went on the offense and scored their sixth touchdown of the game on a seven-yard run by Newpher to make the score 41-20 with 46 seconds remaining.
Following the kickoff, the Dutch ran the clock out, ending the game with the Beavers on top 41-20.
St. Marys is now 4-3 on the season and will return to action Friday night when the play host to the Union High School squad.
Pass for Cash award winners Friday were Bunny Ehrensberger, Barb Schatz, Mary Ellen Hawkins, Jack Brennan, Dickie and Samina, Jim Burke, Natalie Green, Mark and Flip.
There was a nice-sized crowd of Dutch followers on hand for the game on Friday night, despite the cold, damp weather.
