St. Marys Area’s Kevin Hoy and DuBois Area’s Garrett Peterson locked up in a pitcher’s duel Thursday afternoon at Berwind Park as each threw a three-hitter. Unfortunately for the Dutchmen, one of those hits was a home run by Peterson and an RBI single by Adam Young.
Hoy went all seven innings for the Dutch, giving up three hits, walking four and striking out six. Peterson went the distance for the Beavers, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out 13.
“Kevin shut down a good hitting team,” said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato. “Unfortunately, Peterson was sitting on a curveball.”
“Defensively, we played a good game but we need to execute offensively. These guys have to be mentally prepared for every game. We put ourselves in a position to win with Ryan’s (Uhl) leadoff double in the seventh, but we left him stranded,” Azzato continued.
“This weekend ends a long two weeks for these kids,” added the coach, referring to the Elk County Tournament.
Getting the three hits for the Dutchmen were Ryan Uhl with a double and a single and Justin Quiggle with a single. Adam Young had two singles for DuBois and Peterson homered.
Hoy struck out the side in the top of the first inning. The Dutch went down in order in their half of the inning.
Thanks to a double play, the Beavers were put down in order in the second inning. Uhl drew a walk to lead off the home half of the inning, but the next three batters went in order.
Each team left a runner stranded in the third inning. The top of the fourth saw Peterson hitting a home run with one out. In the home half of the inning, Uhl singled but was left stranded.
DuBois left a runner on base in the top of the fifth while the Dutch went down in order in the home half of the inning.
The Beavers left two men on base in the top of the sixth while the Dutch went down in order. In the top of the seventh, Read drew a lead off walk for DuBois. He was sacrificed to second by Derek Heckathorne. A single by Young scored pinch runner Kyle Haskins, giving DuBois the 2-0 lead. A double play ended the inning. In the home half of the inning, Uhl led off with a double, but the next three batters went down in order as DuBois won 2-0.
The Dutch return to action this afternoon at 3 p.m. when they take on the Johnsonburg Rams in the opening game of the Elk County Tournament at Berwind Park. Elk Catholic and Ridgway play the second game at 5 p.m.
