The St. Marys Little League softball Major League All-Stars lost a close game to DuBois 2-1 on Thursday evening at Benzinger Park.
Rebekka Bauer went the distance on the mound for St. Marys, giving up three hits, walking three, and striking out five.
Sarah Snyder worked the mound for DuBois, giving up two hits, walking four, and striking out eight.
St. Marys' two hits came on singles by Olivia Catalone and Rachelle Armanini.
DuBois was led offensively by Erin Siders with a double. Laura Fatula and Katelyn Bender each also singled.
As the visitors on the scoreboard, St. Marys had the first opportunity to put runs on the board, but ended up leaving two runners stranded in the top of the first inning. Catalone and Sydney Eckert both walked, but Morgan Krug and Maggie Dinsmore each struck out, and then Maddison LeGrys grounded out to second to send the game into the home half of the inning, where DuBois also left a pair of runners stranded. Snyder started things off by grounding out to the pitcher. Danessa Allison walked and, after Fatula struck out, Bender also walked to put to runners on for DuBois. DuBois was also unable to capitalize on the situation, though, as Gabi Wayne ended the inning with a line drive to the first baseman.
St. Marys scored their lone run in the top of the second. Lead-off batter Micayla Bothun reached base on a dropped third strike. After Bauer hit an infield fly ball to the first baseman for the first out, Armanini singled, advancing Bothun to second. Josie Smith hit a fielder's choice that saw St. Marys load the bases. A single by Catalone scored Bothun, putting St. Marys up 1-0. The next two batters both struck out swinging, leaving the bases loaded for St. Marys. DuBois left one batter on in the home half of the inning. With one out, Kacie Means reached base on an error, stole second, and advanced to third on a fielder's choice that saw Kylee Bundy out at first. Means was unable to score, though, as Molly Nosker struck out to end the inning.
Batters for both teams went down in order in the third inning.
In the top of the fourth, Bauer tried to bunt, but the ball popped up off the bat and was caught by the catcher for the first out. Armanini reached base on an error and stole second. As Smith struck out, Armanini tried to steal third, making it safely there as the ball was overthrown. She was then sent home but was unable to beat the throw to the catcher and was tagged out. DuBois tied things up in the bottom of the inning. Bender reached base on a single and later stole second. After Wayne struck out, Lexi Ray walked, giving DuBois a pair of base runners. Means flied out to the first baseman for out number two, but then Siders doubled, scoring Bender and advancing Ray to third. Both were left on base, however, as Morgan Henry flied out to first to end the inning with the score tied at 1-all.
St. Marys' batters again went down in order in the top of the fifth, and DuBois took the lead for good in the home half of the inning. With two outs, Fatula singled and scored on an error as Bender hit a deep shot to left that put her on third base. DuBois was unable to keep the momentum going though as Wayne grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning with a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Dinsmore walked and was replaced with pinch runner Alicia Fritz. LeGrys hit an infield fly ball for the first out of the inning. Bothun walked, advancing Dinsmore to second. A fielder's choice by Bauer found Dinsmore thrown out at third. A foul ball by Armanini was caught by DuBois' catcher, ending the game and giving DuBois the 2-1 win.
St. Marys now drops into the losers' bracket and will face Brockway, a 13-12 winner over Smethport/Mt. Jewett Thursday night. The St. Marys Brockway game is scheduled for Benzinger Park at 4 p.m.
