DuBois softball 11/12 all-stars down St. Marys 14-2

The St. Marys Little League Softball 11/12-year-old all-stars opened play in the District 10 Major League South Division Thursday night by hosting the DuBois squad. DuBois registered a 14-2 victory over the St. Marys squad at Benzinger Park.
St. Marys will be in action on Saturday when they travel to Reyn/Sykes for a 4 p.m. game. DuBois will host Punxsutawney, a 15-0 winner in four innings, over Brockway Thursday night.
In last night’s game, St. Marys was limited to three hits in the contest. Sydney Hoffman had a double and a triple, while Sophia Viglione had a single.
Sara Newell went the distance on the mound for St. Marys, giving up nine hits, walking seven and striking out six. Libby Maurer went the distance for DuBois, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out five.
The game, which started an hour late due to inclement weather, saw St. Marys win the coin toss to be the home team.
In the top of the first, DuBois got on the board with three runs on two walks and a single. St. Marys left a runner on base in the home half of the first inning.
In the top of the second, DuBois added four more runs on four hits to take a 7-0 lead. Lauryn Wortman opened the St. Marys half of the inning by reaching base on an error. Rachelle Armanini was hit by a pitch. The next three batters went down in order.
DuBois added a run in the third inning on a walk and a single. Hoffman led off the home half of the third with a double. She moved to third when Emily Evers reached base on an error. A double steal resulted in Hoffman scoring and Evers being thrown out at second as St. Marys cut the DuBois leads to 8-1.
The fourth inning saw DuBois score two more runs on two hits to take a 10-1 lead. St. Marys left Cassidy Cunningham stranded after she was hit by a pitch.
DuBois left a runner on base in the top of the fifth inning. Hoffman led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple. Olivia Catalone reached base on a fielder’s choice, erasing Hoffman, who was attempting to score on the play. Viglione singled. On a double steal, Catalone scored, making the score 10-2.
DuBois came up with four runs in the top half of the sixth on three walks and a single to open a 14-2 lead. St. Marys went down in order as DuBois recorded the 14-2 win.
