The DuBois Beaver wrestling team advanced to the finals of the District 9 Class AAA team championship by handing the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch squad a 40-25 loss last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Beavers will now meet top seed Clearfield Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the DuBois Area High School for the District 9-AAA title. The Dutchmen were seeded second and the Beavers third.
In last nightâ€™s match, the Beavers opened a 30-10 lead with five matches remaining to hold off the Dutch.
â€śI would like to congratulate Coach (Luke) Bundy and his DuBois team on their win tonight. They wanted it more than we did,â€ť said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra.
â€śDuBois wrestled well and won every toss-up match. They earned it. They got the ball rolling and we couldnâ€™t get it going. We got outwrestled tonight.
â€śIt was a good experience for the kids. Hopefully we can get in a position to wrestle for the District title next year.â€ť
The match started at 125 pounds, where Garrett Brown of the Beavers pinned Bill Gabor at the 52-second mark of their match. At 130 pounds, Matt Busatto of the Beavers decisioned Alex Coudriet by an 8-5 score. Tom Sleigh of the Beavers decisioned Darren Lyon by a 4-2 score at 135 pounds, giving DuBois the 12-0 lead.
Sam Miller got the Dutch on the board when he recorded a 12-0 major decision over Zane Drum, 12-4. DuBoisâ€™ Chris Powers decisioned Allan Gursky 4-2 at 145 pounds and Geno Morelli of DuBois pinned Alex Feldbauer at the 4:21 mark of their 152-pound match as DuBois led 21-4.
Dutchman Michael Brennen made the score 21-10 when he pinned Shane Marshall at the 3:50 mark of their 160-pound match. Joe Morrison of the Beavers pinned Alex Geitner at the 2:46 mark of their 171-pound match and Landon Hanna of DuBois picked up a 13-4 major decision over Joe McLaughlin at 189 pounds, giving DuBois the 31-10 lead.
Jimmy Antonelli of the Dutch decisioned Austin Barr 12-6 at 215 pounds, making the score 31-13. Kevin Hoy of the Dutch made the score 31-19 when he pinned Nathan Petitti at the 1:45 mark of their 285-pound match.
Bryce Swauger of the Beavers made the score 37-19 when he pinned Damien Wensel at the 2:31 mark of their 103 pound match. DuBoisâ€™ Anthony Vizza picked up a 4-3 decision over Trenton Bowers at 112 pounds to make the score 40-19.
Dutchman Evan Smith pinned Mark Marshall at the 2:51 mark of their 119-pound match to make the final score 40-25 in favor of the Beavers.
St. Marys is now 5-8 on the season. They return to action next Wednesday when they play host to the Punxsutawney Chucks. This will also be Senior Night for the Dutch.
