The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team closed out their season with a 58-48 loss to the Johnsonburg Rams last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Rams were able to outscore the Dutchmen by a 20-7 margin in the second quarter to open a 32-17 halftime lead. In the second half, St. Marys outscored Johnsonburg by a 31-25 margin.
â€śThe biggest momentum-changer was when we had a two-point lead late in the first quarter. They scored the last four points of the first period and the first nine points of the second quarter to open a lead which we were never able to make up,â€ť said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
â€śI am proud of the four seniors. They played well in the second half,â€ť said Guido. â€śI appreciate the four seniorsâ€™ work ethic and their leadership and wish them the best of luck in the future.â€ť
The Dutch were led offensively by Justin Quiggle with 14 points on two twos, three threes and a one-for-two night from the foul line. Sam Guido finished with 12 points on three threes and a three-for-four night from the foul line. Jimmy Werner and Brandon Vollmer each added nine points.
Johnsonburg placed three players in double figures led by Cole Petersonâ€™s 14 points. Peterson scored his points on one two, two threes and a four-for-four night from the foul line. Cameron Grumley and Quinn Luhr each added 11 points. Grumley scored his on four field goals and a three-for-four night from the foul line, while Luhr scored his points on four twos and a three.
â€śThe second quarter gave us a cushion and the lead and allowed us to win the game,â€ť said Johnsonburg coach Bill Shuey.
â€śSt. Marys didnâ€™t quit and I didnâ€™t expect them to. They did a nice job defensively. When we kicked it out, we got very few open looks,â€ť Shuey added.
Kyle Sheldon gave the Rams the 2-0 lead with Peterson scoring off a steal, 4-0. A three by Quiggle and a two by Werner gave the Dutch the 5-4 lead. Frank Kocjancic scored for Johnsonburg, with Quiggle answering for St. Marys. Luhr scored on a putback, 8-7. A three by Guido gave the Dutch the 10-8 lead. Sheldon and Grumley scored in the closing minute of the first quarter as Johnsonburg led 12-10.
The Rams went on a 9-0 run to open the second quarter. Sheldon hit a three, Luhr and Mitch Holmberg hit twos and Grumley converted two foul shots. Justin Beimel scored on a putback for the Dutch, 21-12. Kocjancic scored for the Rams with Quiggle sinking one of two foul shots. Peterson connected on a three before Quiggle scored 26-15. Buckets by Luhr and Grumley gave the Rams the 30-15 lead. Werner and Grumley traded buckets to close out the first half with the Rams on top 32-17.
Luhr and Quiggle traded threes to open the second half. A three by Quiggle cut the Ram lead to 35-23. A foul shot by Grumley made it 36-23. Vollmer and Kocjancic traded field goals, 38-25. Vollmer hit a field goal and added two of four foul shots, 38-29. A three by Guido and a two by Vollmer cut the Ramsâ€™ lead to 38-34 with 1:25 left in the third quarter. Peterson hit a three and Luhr a two to close out the third quarter with the Rams on top 43-34.
Sheldon scored for the Rams to start the fourth quarter. Guido sank two foul shots, 45-36. Mike Shuey scored for the Rams, 47-36. Guido hit a three to make it 47-39 with 4:58 left. Grumley scored for Johnsonburg, 49-39. Two foul shots by Werner cut it to 49-41. Shuey hit a field goal and Kocjancic added a foul shot as Johnsonburg went up 52-41. A three-point play by Werner cut it to 52-44 with 1:50 left. In the final minutes, Johnsonburg outscored St. Marys 6-4 to win the game 58-48.
The Dutchmen finished their season with a 9-13 record. They were 0-10 in the District 9 League.
Playing in their final game for the Dutchmen were Justin Quiggle, Jimmy Werner, Sam Guido and Michael Fox.
Johnsonburg finished regular-season play with a 19-3 record. They will entertain DuBois Central Friday night at 7 p.m. in the AML semifinals. The winner advances to Saturday nightâ€™s championship game at St. Marys Area with an 8 p.m. start.

The St. Marys junior varsity squad finished their season with a 7-15 record as they downed the Rams by a 59-40 score.
The Dutch took a 13-10 first-period lead. The Rams outscored the Dutch 13-12 in the second quarter as St. Marys led 25-23 at the half.
The Dutch outscored the Rams 12-4 in the third quarter and 22-13 in the fourth quarter to win the game 59-40.
