Dutch gymnasts take second in Bronze Division
The St. Marys Area gymnastics team competed at the PA Classic Gymnastics Team Championship Friday and Saturday. The event was held at Chambersburg.The Dutch squad placed second in the bronze division with 125.576 points. Altoona won the division with a total of 128.183 points, followed by St. Marys, Hanover 115.817 and DuBois 115.659.The St. Marys squad was bumped to the bronze division and was seeded first in this division.“Although we ended up being down a team member, the team did a nice job trying to keep up the momentum,” said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless.“We knew that it was going to be close with Altoona and they simply outperformed us.“I was extremely pleased with the team’s last performances of the season. They didn’t give up. It was a good ending to an awesome season.” The St. Marys squad finished with a 5-3 season. They placed second at Districts and had six gymnasts qualify for the individual championships. Competing in the Bronze Division were Mackenzie Neureiter in the vault, beam and floor and Michaela Sorg in the all-around. Competing in the Silver Division were Abby Wittman in the vault, Megan Longhi in the all-around and Justin Huey in the vault and bars. Three placed in the individual state meet: Sorg fifth on vault, Longhi 10th on vault and Huey fourth on vault and seventh on bars. The gymnastics team concluded their season with a second-place finish at the team championship meet.The St. Marys gymnasts’ scores at the team gymnastics meet were:Molly Eshbach - vault - 9.050, bars 7.700, beam 6.644 and floor 7.767; Bobbi Fox - 7.600 in beam; Megan Longhi 8.300 in vault, 7.0505 in bars, 8.633 in beam and 7.967 in floor; Mackenzie Neureiter 7.900 in vault, 4.500 in bars, 7.367 in beam and 8.017 in floor; Michaela Sorg - 7.950 in vault, 7.250 in bars, 7.733 in beam and 7.517 in floor; Abby Wittman - 8.500 in vault, 7.225 in bar and 7.233 in floor. The team’s totals were: vault 33.750, bars 29.225, beam 31.333 and floor 31.268.
