Dutch hold off Owls 50-39 for D9 League win

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team raised their District 9 League record to 2-0 with a 50-39 victory over the Bradford Owls last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutch built a 40-26 lead after three quarters, only to see the Owls outscore the Dutch 13-2 in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter to cut the St. Marys lead to 42-39 with 2:11 left. However, Bradford failed to score the remainder of the game.
“Basketball is a game of ebb and flow, and we played well in the third quarter and they (Bradford) did well in the fourth,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
“Justin Quiggle had a nice game for us tonight. Ryan Mancuso and Ryan Uhl did a nice job inside for us, as they both had seven blocks. I was real happy with Ryan Hockman coming off the bench and contributing leadership late in the game,” Guido added.
The Dutch were led offensively by Justin Quiggle with 15 points on four field goals and a seven-for-eight night from the foul line. Dylan Reigel had 11 points on one two and three threes. Bob Vollmer and Ryan Uhl were next with seven points each.
Bradford was led by Charles Fair with 19 points on two twos and five threes. Cody Faucher was next with nine points.
Faucher opened the scoring in the contest with a field goal. A three by Reigel gave the Dutch the 3-2 lead. Forrest Works scored for the Owls, 4-3. St. Marys went on a nine-point run as Quiggle sank two foul shots, Reigel a three, Vollmer a putback and Hockman a two, 12-4. Wilber scored for the Owls. Quiggle closed out the scoring in the quarter with a field goal as the Dutch went up 14-6.
Fair hit a three for the Owls. Quiggle hit a two before Faucher sank two foul shots, 16-11. Quiggle went on a 6-0 run as he scored on two field goals and sank two foul shots, 22-11. Works hit a field goal and Faucher connected on two foul shots, 22-15. Mancuso and Vollmer scored, giving St. Marys the 26-15 halftime lead.
Fair opened the second half with a three. Faucher followed with a two before Vollmer sank a foul shot, 27-20. Works scored for Bradford, with Uhl getting a putback on the other end. Fair scored for Bradford, 29-24. Reigel hit a three and Hockman scored two field goals as the Dutch went up 36-24. Fair scored for the Owls. Reigel and Vollmer scored as the third quarter, ended giving the Dutch a 40-26 lead.
Uhl gave the Dutch the 42-26 lead to open the fourth. Bradford then went on a 13-0 run to close the gap to 42-39 with 2:11 left on a foul shot by Faucher. Mancuso scored a bucket with 1:57 left, giving St. Marys the 44-39 lead. In the closing minutes, the Dutch were six of eight from the foul line as they won the game 50-39. Uhl and Quiggle each sank three of four opportunities.

The Dutch are now 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the District 9 League

St. Marys is off until next Wednesday, when they host the DuBois Area Beavers in another District 9 League game.

The St. Marys Area Dance Team entertained those in attendance with their routine at halftime of the varsity contest.

JVs lose
The St. Marys junior varsity lost a 41-28 game to the Owls.
Bradford took a 12-6 first-period lead. The Owls outscored the Dutch 9-7 in the second quarter to take a 21-13 halftime lead.
Each team scored eight third-period points. Bradford outscored St. Marys 10-7 in the fourth quarter to win the game 41-28.
