The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen boys' soccer squad ended their regular season by slipping and sliding their way to a muddy 2-1 victory over the Port Allegheny Gators in a cold and rainy match on Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.
All of the scoring for both teams took place in the first half.
Even though the Dutchmen were attacking the goal on the muddier end of the field, they still managed to dominate possession of the ball throughout the first half. After a number of close shots, Dutchman Weston Challingsworth was able to slip a shot past the Port keeper with 29:37 remaining in the half to give St. Marys a 1-0 lead.
The Dutchmen were not content with the one-goal advantage and continued putting pressure on the Gators' keeper. With 12:20 left on the clock in the half, Gideon Wolfel put a nice shot into the back of the net to extend the team's advantage to 2-0.
The Gators would notch their only goal of the game about three minutes later, as they put a shot past the St. Marys keeper with 9:59 left to play in the half.
In the first half, the Dutchmen outshot the Gators 14-4 and also had a 2-1 advantage on corner kicks.
The second half was a defensive struggle for both teams as the rainy weather and muddy field conditions made it challenging at times to maintain control of the ball. Both keepers were kept on their toes, though, as the teams were still able to get off several nice shots.
For the second half, the Dutchmen outshot the Gators 10-6 and recorded a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks.
With the win, the Dutchmen finished their regular season with a record of 9-9. They will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 27, as they take on the Punxsutawney Chucks in a 7 p.m. match at DuBois Area High School in the opening round of the D9 boys' AA playoffs.
