Tuesday was a nice afternoon to be out enjoying a soccer match and the spectators who attended the boys' soccer match at St. Marys Area High School were treated to a dominating performance by the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen soccer squad, who picked up a 7-1 win over the visiting Smethport Hubbers. The match saw six different Dutch players score goals, while Brett Lanzel and Josh Burns split time at keeper for St. Marys.
"[It was a] great team effort today by everybody," said St. Marys head coach Russ Micale. "There was a lot of good passing, a lot of good communicating, and I was very pleased with the way they played."
Things got off to a slow start in the first half as both teams traded control of the ball. St. Marys had some nice shots, but the Smethport keeper was able to keep the game scoreless until almost three quarters of the way through the half. With 12:03 remaining, St. Marys' Weston Challingsworth was finally able to put the team on the board as he found the back of the net after the Smethport keeper made a dive to stop the ball, but was unable to secure it. The score put St. Marys up 1-0.
Once the Dutchmen started scoring, it was hard to stop them. Matt Hoffman was the next St. Marys player to score, with his shot bouncing over the Smethport keeper's head and into the goal with 4:33 remaining to make the lead 2-0. Just over a minute later, Evan Lepovetsky extended St. Marys' lead to 3-0 after he put a shot past the Smethport keeper with 3:17 remaining in the half.
St. Marys carried the 3-0 lead into halftime and got right to work extending it once play resumed. Less than two minutes into the second half, Tim Mosebarger made the score 4-0 as he headed the ball into the net with 38:09 remaining.
Mike Fox put St. Marys up 5-0 after scoring with 31:14 remaining, and Mosebarger made his second goal of the match less than 10 minutes later, making the score 6-0 in favor of the Dutchmen with 25:07 remaining.
St. Marys' final goal of the match came less than a minute later as Zachery Fox had a shot bounce off the crossbar and past the Smethport keeper with 24:43 remaining to make the lead 7-0.
St. Marys faced increasing pressure from Smethport throughout the second half and Burns made a number of nice saves as the team tried for a shutout; however, despite a good effort, Smethport's Dario Caminite was finally able to put the team on the board when he slipped the ball past Burns with 14:26 remaining to make the score 7-1.
With the win, the Dutchmen are now 3-1 on the season and will be on the road Thursday evening as they face cross-town rival Elk County Catholic High School at Angela Huey Field in Fox Township at 7 p.m.
