Dutch use strong second half to beat Clarion 57-48
Led by Jimmy Werner’s 29 points, the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team raised their record to 5-1 on the season with a 57-48 victory over the Clarion Bobcats Friday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.The Dutch used a strong second half to defeat the Bobcats. Clarion held a slim 26-24 lead at the half, only to see St. Marys outscore them 33-22 in the second 16 minutes of play.“I thought we had a sluggish start which was the effect of a long road trip (to Coudersport) last night,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.“The spark for us was when Justin Beimel hit the big three to get us close and we were able to pick up our defense intensity after that,” said the coach.Beimel’s three came with 1:40 left in the third period and cut Clarion’s lead to 33-31. From there, Werner would score four points, a field goal and two foul shots, as the Dutch led 35-33 at the end of three quarters. Werner’s foul shot with 29 seconds left gave St. Marys their first lead of the game, 34-33.“We need to be aggressive defensively from the start of the game, not lethargic. That’s not our game,” said Guido.“We got into early foul trouble and our bench stepped up. Justin Beimel and Quinn Cunningham had good nights for us,” he added.The Dutch were led by Werner’s 29 points on 11 field goals and a seven-for-10 night from the foul line. He also hauled in 10 rebounds. Justin Quiggle scored 11 points on three twos, one three and a two-for-two night from the foul line.The Bobcats were led by Roland Shannonhouse with 17 points on one two, four threes and a three-for-four night from the foul line. Antonio Troese scored 10 points on three twos, one three and a one-for-two night from the foul line.The game opened with Troese hitting a field goal and T.J. Armstrong sinking two foul shots. Quiggle answered for the Dutch before Armstrong sank two foul shots. Shajuan Carrero scored for St. Marys, 6-4. Shannonhouse hit a three to make it 9-4. Werner made it 9-6 before Troese sank one of two foul shots, giving Clarion the 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.Shannonhouse and Werner traded buckets to open the second period. Camron Kirkland and Werner traded buckets before Troese and Armstrong scored, giving Clarion the 18-10 lead. Beimel scored on a putback before Shannonhouse hit a three, 21-12. Werner sank three of four foul shots and Carrero scored on a putback, 21-17. Shannonhouse and Quiggle traded threes, 24-20. Brandon Vollmer scored on a putback for the Dutch, 24-22. Shannonhouse sank two foul shots before Vollmer scored on another putback, cutting the Clarion lead to 26-24 at the half.Clarion’s Brandon Heeter scored on a putback to open the second half. Quiggle sank two foul shots before Kirkland hit a three for Clarion, 31-26. Werner and Kirkland traded buckets, 33-28. With 1:40 left in the period, Beimel hit his three followed by Werner’s four points as the Dutch went up 35-33 with eight minutes remaining.Quiggle opened the scoring in the fourth with a field goal. Werner scored off a steal before Kirkland sank two foul shots, cutting the Dutch lead to 38-35. Werner scored on two field goals before Shannonhouse hit a three, 42-38. Werner made it 44-38 before Troese hit a three for Clarion, 44-41. The Dutch went on an 8-0 run as Quiggle scored off a steal, Sam Guido hit two foul shots and Werner made two buckets, one off a steal, 52-41. Troese scored on a putback, 52-43. Werner hit a field goal with 2:12 left, 54-43. In the closing minutes the Bobcats outscored the Dutch 5-3, but it wasn’t enough as St. Marys won 57-48.Game notesThe Dutch are now 5-1 on the season.St. Marys returns to action next Thursday in the opening round of the Elk County Boys’ Holiday Basketball Tournament set for St. Marys Area.
