Dutch wrestlers hold on for 36-31 win over Clearfield

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad held on for a 36-31 victory over the Clearfield Bisons last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutch had built a 33-18 lead with five bouts remaining. Clearfield was able to cut the Dutch lead to 33-31 going into the final bout of the evening. In that bout, Dutchman Bill Gabor recorded a 7-4 decision over Kody Mayhew to give St. Marys the 36-31 win.
“Any time you beat a Clearfield team it is a good win. They are a well-coached team,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra.
“The kids did a nice job tonight. We started out well with (Alex) Feldbauer, (Josh) Cameroni and (Joey) McLaughlin winning in the upper weights,” said the coach.
“In the end it came down to Billy Gabor really earning the win and wrestling well,” said Surra. “It was a team effort tonight.”
The match opened at 160 pounds, where Dutchman Alex Feldbauer pinned Michael Beck at the 3:18 mark of their match, giving St. Marys the early 6-0 lead. Josh Cameroni of the Dutch made the score 9-0 with a 9-5 decision over Kody Hepfer at 170 pounds. Dutchman Joe McLaughlin pinned Garrett Timko at the 5:35 mark of their 182-pound match as St. Marys led 15-0.
Clearfield got on the board when Devin Sinclair pinned Ben Cheatle at the 195-pound match.
Gary Fledderman of the Dutch made the score 21-6 when he pinned Shane Billings at the 2:53 mark of their 220-pound bout. Clearfield’s Jordan Lancaster pinned Brian Carnahan at the 3:17 mark of their 285-pound match. Clearfield’s Noah Cline made the score 21-18 when he pinned Ray Dent at the 3:59 mark of their 106-pound bout.
Willie McGonnell won by forfeit at 113 pounds, giving St. Marys the 27-18 lead. Evan Smith of the Dutch pinned Frankie Aveni at the 4:04 mark of their 120-pound match, giving St. Marys the 33-18 lead.
Clearfield’s Jonathan Sponsler edged Dylan Smith 2-0 in overtime. Sponsler got a reversal in the first 30-second overtime period. Dylan Graham of the Bisons recorded a 12-4 major decision over Alex Coudriet at 132 pounds to cut the Dutch lead to 33-25. Wyatt Stucke of the Bisons decisioned Tyler Yetzer 9-5 at 138 pounds, making the score 33-28 with two bouts remaining. Clearfield’s Nolan Barger decisioned Sam Miller 4-0 at 145 pounds, cutting the St. Marys lead to 33-31.
At 152 pounds, Dutchman Bill Gabor recorded a 7-4 decision over Kody Mayhew, making the final score 36-31 in favor of the Dutch.
St. Marys, now 3-4 on the year, will return to action Thursday when they travel to Smethport to take on the Hubbers. Junior high is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start, with varsity to follow at 7 p.m.
The Dutch will play host to Johnsonburg and Sheffield on Saturday in a tri-match. St. Marys meets Johnsonburg at 10 a.m., with the Rams and Sheffield squaring off at 11 a.m. St. Marys and Sheffield are scheduled to meet at noon. St. Marys will travel to Brockway on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
