The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad won six of the last eight bouts to come from behind to defeat the Corry Beavers by a 37-32 score Thursday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutch were trailing 25-3 when Ray Dent won by forfeit at 106 pounds. Dutchman Willie McGonnell won a major decision and Evan Smith won by forfeit. Dylan Smith picked up a pin at 126 to knot the score at 25-all. After Corry won a decision at 132 to go up 28-25, Dutchman Tyler Yetzer won by a pin and Sam Miller won by forfeit to make the score 37-28 with one match remaining.
“We had a good comeback. It wasn’t pretty and not the way I would have designed it,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra.
“We got big wins from freshmen Willie McGonnell at 113 and Dylan Smith at 126,” said Surra. “Alex Coudriet wrestled well at 132 and Tyler Yetzer and Sam Miller in the middle are doing a heck of a job. Gary Fledderman had a win at 220. Every one of the little wins made a difference in the match tonight. It was good to see the freshmen step up.”
“I was glad that Corry could come down tonight. We have Brookville next Thursday and Clearfield the following Tuesday in a big District 9 match. Clearfield’s going to be tough,” Surra said. “Tonight was a step in the right direction. Now we have to keep getting better.”
The match started at 160 pounds where Corry’s Shane Thaubert recorded an 11-3 major decision over Josh Cameroni as the Beavers led 4-0. Alex Suydan of the Beavers pinned Ben Cheatle at the 1:41 mark of their 170-pound, match while Zac Morris of the Beavers pinned Derek Taylor at the 1:17 mark of their 182-pound match. At 195 pounds, Drew Dunmore of Corry made the score 19-0 when he picked up a tough 8-7 decision over Joe McLaughlin.
Gary Fledderman got the Dutch on the board at 220 pounds when he picked up an 11-4 decision over Paul Peters. Tim Suydan of Corry pinned Brian Carnahan at the 2:47 mark of the 285-pound bout as Corry led 25-3.
Dutchman Ray Dent won by forfeit at 106 pounds, 25-9. Willie McGonnell of the Dutch recorded an 8-0 major decision over Curtis Royeck at 113 pounds to make the score 25-13. Evan Smith of the Dutch won by forfeit at 120 pounds, 25-19.
Dylan Smith of the Dutch pinned Tim Long at the 4:18 mark of their 126-pound match to knot the score at 25-all. Levi Catafu of the Beavers decisioned Alex Coudriet 4-1 at 132 pounds, giving the Beavers the 28-25 lead.

At 152 pounds, Cody Bailey of the Beavers recorded a 9-0 major decision over Bill Gabor, making the final score 37-32 in favor of the Dutch.
