Dutchman Jimmy Werner qualifies for PIAA meet in discus

KANE - The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch track and field squad competed at the District 9-AAA track and field championships held at Kane Area High School.
The Dutchmen placed fourth in the team race with 43 points. The Bradford Owls won the boys’ team title with 127 points, followed by DuBois with 112, Punxsutawney 61, St. Marys 43 and Clearfield 32.
The DuBois Area Lady Beavers won the girls’ AAA title with 115 points, followed by Bradford with 81.5, Clearfield 44 and Punxsutawney 35.5. The Lady Dutch will compete in the District 9-AA track and field championships Friday at Brookville.
St. Marys Area qualified one athlete for the PIAA track and field championships May 25 and 26 at Shippensburg University-- Jimmy Werner, who qualified in the discus. Werner took second in the discus with a throw of 155’1”. The qualifying mark for the PIAA meet is 153’. Werner also placed third in the shot put with a throw of 46’2” and fifth in the javelin with a throw of 147’1”.
Also taking second at the meet was the 4x100 relay team of Brian Merritt, Trenton Schreiber, Philip Danz and Werner with a time of 44.52 seconds. The 4x400 relay team of Alec Foster, Mitchell O’vell, Schreiber and Gideon Woelfel placed second in a time of 3:34.36.
Woelfel placed second in the 3200 run with a time of 10:26.48. He was third in the 800 run with a time of 2:04.45. Dutchman Alec Foster was second in the 800 run with a time of 2:04.04.
The 4x800 relay team of K.O. Deyev, Jacob Fritz, Clancy Wiesner and Austin Frey placed fourth with a time of 9:00.04.
Trenton Schreiber placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 39’10”. Christian Keller placed fifth in the shot put with throw of 41’5”.
Philip Danz placed sixth in the 100 dash with a time of 12.40 seconds. Brian Merritt was sixth in the 200 dash with a time of 24.38 seconds. Josh Burns was sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.05 seconds.
The James Manners Awards, which are presented to the athletes who score the most individual points at the meet, were presented to Catherine Sheffo of DuBois in the girls’ meet, with Aziz Yousif and David Reinhardt, both of Bradford, being co-winners in the boys’ meet.
