The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team celebrated Senior Night with a 73-53 victory over the Clearfield Bisons last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutch took the early 9-0 lead on their way to a 22-8 first-quarter lead. St. Marys led by 10 at the half and nine at the end of three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Dutch outscored the Bisons 19-8 to give the Dutch the 20-point victory.
â€śWe made a concerted effort to push the tempo tonight and the players executed very well for only having a Saturday practice,â€ť said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
â€śTo me that was the difference in the game tonight,â€ť added Guido.
The Dutch offense was led by Jimmy Werner with 26 points on nine field goals and an eight-for-11 night from the foul line. Justin Quiggle added 22 points on eight twos, one three and a three-for-four night from the foul line. Brandon Vollmer scored 10 points on four field goals and a two-for-five night from the foul line.
Clearfield was led by Christian Lezzer with 16 points on four twos, two threes and a two-for-two night from the foul line. Robbie Myers scored 12 points on six field goals.
St. Marys jumped out to a 9-0 start as Werner had three buckets and Quiggle hit a three. Curtis Frye sank a foul shot for Clearfield before Quiggle and Vollmer scored field goals, 13-1. Lezzer scored for the Bisons, 13-3. The Dutch went on a 6-0 run as Vollmer sank two foul shots and Werner scored on a putback and later added two foul shots, 19-3. Lezzer sank two foul shots, 19-5. A three by Quinn Cunningham gave the Dutch the 22-5 lead. Lezzer hit a three late in the quarter as St. Marys led 22-8 at the end of one period.
Clearfield scored the first five points of the second quarter. Quiggle scored on a putback and a minute later Werner added a field goal, 26-13. The Bisons scored nine unanswered points to cut the Dutch lead to 26-22 with 1:58 left in the half. Werner and Myers traded buckets, 28-24. Quiggle hit a two, 30-24, at the 1:19 mark. Werner converted one of two foul shots at the 52-second mark. Beau Swales scored for Clearfield, 31-26. Quiggle made the score 33-26 with 34 seconds remaining. Dutchman Quinn Cunningham banked home a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded, giving the Dutch the 36-26 halftime lead.
Lezzer opened the second half with a bucket. The Dutch went on a 6-0 run with Vollmer, Werner and Quiggle scoring, 42-28. The Bisons cut the Dutch lead to 42-34. Sam Guido converted two foul shots for the Dutchmen, 44-34. Clearfield cut the Dutch lead to 44-41 with 2:40 left in the period. Werner sank two foul shots and added a field goal, as did Quiggle, giving St. Marys the 50-41 lead. Trey Jordan and Quiggle exchanged buckets and Shawn Lord scored for the Bisons, 52-45. Quiggle made the score 54-45 as the third period came to a close.
Werner opened the fourth quarter, scoring by sinking one of two technical foul shots. Vollmer scored at the 7:31 mark and the 7:09 mark to give the Dutch the 59-45 lead. Seth Beardsley sank a foul shot for Clearfield, 59-46. Werner converted a three-point play, 62-46, with 6:43 left. Swales sank a foul shot and Lezzer hit a two for Clearfield. St. Marys went on a 7-0 run. Quiggle sank two foul shots, Werner one, Fox hit a three and Quiggle added a foul shot, making the score 69-49 with 3:34 left. Each team scored four points in the closing minutes to make the final score 73-53. Shajuan Carrero had the Dutchmenâ€™s four points.
The Dutchmen are now 9-12 on the season.
St. Marys will close out their season on Wednesday when they play host to the Johnsonburg Rams. Junior varsity tips off at 6 p.m., with the varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m.
Last night was Senior Night for the Dutch as the senior cheerleaders and players, along with their parents, were recognized in special pre-game ceremonies.

The St. Marys junior varsity squad lost a tough 41-39 contest to the Bisons.
Clearfield took a 13-10 first-period lead, then outscored the Dutch 7-3 in the second quarter for a 29-13 halftime lead.
Each team scored nine third-period points. In the fourth quarter, the Dutch outscored the Bisons 17-12, but it wasnâ€™t enough as Clearfield won by two, 41-39.
